Equestria has fallen, not to plague or invasion, but from within. The ruling family, which had grown to four with the introduction of the royal brothers, Tremalion and Heculius, commanders of the weather, has split with fierce rivalries between the four. The most despised is the Nation of the Sun, is ruled by Celestia, which is sometimes called the Solar Empire. Another is the Nation of the Moon, also known as the Lunar Kingdom (Sorry Lunar Republic fans) is in constant war with the Solar Nation. The two other nations, the Nation of Storms, ruled by Tremalion, and the Nation of the West, ruled by Heculius, are fiercely independant and tend to launch constant raids on any aggressor nation. Further Information: the Nation of the Sun rules over Northeastren Equestria with its capital resting in Canterlot, and controls the bulk of Equestria manufacturing. The Nation of the Moon rules over the Southeastren Equestria, with its capital resting in Ponymond (Equestria's version of Richmond, Virginia) and controls a slightly more farming based economy. The Nation of Storms rules over Northwestren Equestria, its capital is in North Cloudsdale (Cloudsdale was physically split between Tremalion and Heculius), and controls a slightly more manufacturing economy. Finally, The Nation of the West rules over what is left of Equestria, had its capital in South Cloudsdale, and controls an economy based mainly off mining and farming, with an ok amount of manufacuring.
