So like I was reading this article on one of the many MLP fansites out there, and the comments made me rather sad. I'll be honest I have a low tolerance for negativity these days, ecspecially from a fanbase thats supposed to "Love & Tolerate" So people basshing Ms. Williams episodes makes me pretty sad, so I decided to make this thread for people to post POSITIVE comments on Williams work on the show so far. http://www.mlponies.com/2012/08/15/writer-appreciation-day-2-merriwether-williams/ Honestly I for one LOVE her episodes (sans Mare-Do-Well, which even it has some charm to it after afew watches.) But yeah I think people are unfairly critical of her episodes just because she had a weak start, I mean again IMO aside from MMDW, the rest of her work, "Hearthwarmings Eve", "Putting Your Hoof Down", and "Dragon Quest" Have all been pretty enjoyable epsiodes, infact I would say their some of my favorites of season 2. Anywho, getting on topic and ranting aside. What I like about MerriWeather Williams episodes are that they (IMO) Actually do feel simmilar to toons from the 90's early 00's. Some people comment on one of the reasons they like MLP is that it reminds them of some of the toons they watched in the 90's, I think Williams episodes have that feeling the most. I also like how she, like Larson isn't afraid to develop the characters & the world. Admitingly she may develop the characters by showing their more negative sides, traits, but thats not a bad thing, giving depth to a character (IMO) involves showing the best of their positive & negative sides. As for the Episodes themselves Mysterious Mare-Do-Well: Admitingly a weak episode, but it does have alot of nice visual moments, the Darkwing Duck, Batman:TAS & Spider-Man references are nice. And it was fun to see Rainowdash let her fame go to her head to the point she was desperate once it was gone. Yeah the way they attained the moral was flawed, her friends shouldn't have tricked her, or at least apologized to her after she did to them, but meh still a decent romp. Hearthwarming's Eve: I really like this episode, not only do we learn how Equestria was founded, but the moral about how Hate is foolish and only leads to death & destruction and love can bring salvation really resonated with me, sure its abit cheesy, but its heartwarming dag nab it, and a heck of a better Holiday special then you see from most other media/shows these days, lol Putting Your Hoof Down: This episodes is just fun, Iron Will is a fun character, and Fluttershy being assertive is just awesomely entertaining, sure she over does it and becomes a jerk, but c'mon its such a jarring 180, how can you not enjoy it!? And again the moral is solid, its important to learn to stand up for yourself in a civil manner. Dragon Quest: Ok yeah I can see why people complain about this, it doesn't really answer any questions about Spike or Dragons, and the sparity pandering feels tacked on, but dag nab it, its still an enjoyable episode, I like the development we get for dragons & pheonix's, seeing how they live out in the badlands and what not, also the symbolism of Spike Riding the black sheep on his way to catch up with the great dragon migration was just great! And personally I don't mind the Spike/Rarity thing taking a 180 from usual in this episode, it was fun to see Rarity finally giving him the affection he wanted but Spike being to embarrassed/distressed to enjoy it. So yeah MerriWeather's style may be a bit more brash and cynical then a few other writers, but I for one think far to many fans are overly negative towards the poor gal merely because she had a weak start, she's been in the business for a long time, she knows how to write a toon, don't believe me just go look at her work on Angry Beavers, Adventure Time, Spongebob, etc. And I personally consider her one of my favorite writers to work on the show along with M.A. Larson, Megan Mcarthy & Cindy Morrow! So yeah to all my fellow Bronies/Pegasisters who also enjoy this gals work, but have been to scared to do so, fear scorn no more, and come share your reasons on why you LOVE/ENJOY this gals MLP:FIM eps!
Why do people hate the MMDW episode so much?! Sure it wasn't the greatest, but it built and developed so much character! You get to see how Rainbow Dash isn't totally perfect and has her faults in that she's big-headed and attention-seeking, and you can learn a lot more about boasting in that episode than you can in, ironically, "Boast Busters". The message shows two things at the end: 1. Be humble because people will like you a lot more. 2. Anyone has the capability to do great things regardless of who they are (even Fluttershy!) Not to mention all the action that was in it like the dam breaking, the construction site, the run-away cart and everything. I still get a chuckle making fun of how thoughtless Rainbow Dash is when she says "Oh no, there's something wrong with the baby!" right after it's plummeted down a hill in it's carriage. A lot of people were expecting Luna or Trixie. That's why people don't like this episode it seems. But that shouldn't taint it, or Ms Merriweather's start to episode writing. The other community officer here uses the username "Merriweather" or "Merru" for short or "mru" for shortest.
@TPP: Yeah I agree, Even though I admit its lower on my list of re-watchability, MMDW does have its fair share of entertaining moments, And as you sad and I said in my initial post, people let their negative view of it effect their view of Williams writing in general, which is HIHGLY unfair IMO. Although I will say at least from my perspective, the reason people dislike it was how it ended, admitingly, while entertaining the other mane 6 little plot/prank was over the top, they were just as guilty of a "friendship hiccup" or whatever you'd call it as RD. But yes overall the episode is still entertaining despite its arguably flawed ending. But ahh yeah, again, I for one cannot wait to see more of Ms. Williams work in season 3 and onward, I look foward to seeing her, Mr. Larson and the rest of the writing staff continue to develop the characters & world of MLP:FIM! And oh I see its an abbreviation/nickname of sorts, well glad to know theres other members here that appreciate her work.
don't know why so much hate is there for MMDW. I really liked that episode. Idk, but I likes all of her episodes. I mean, they are not A Canterlot Wedding, or Lesson Zero, but they are good, very good. idk, but I like and appreciate her work, as well as other storywriters.
I like her episodes, but then I like all episodes. By the way, Stereo, our Merriweather's name is unrelated to MerriWeather Williams. :derpe: Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk 2
Putting Your Hoof Down was one of my favorites from Season 2. We got to see more Flutterage, even though she really went over the top when bashing Pinkie and Rarity, but that part also reminded me of something I did years ago too which resulted in me catching myself in a rage mood against my friends.
I don't mind her episodes. They don't make it into my favourites but she writes okay-ishly (Apart from some dumb settings). I can see why people disliked episodes like MMDW, but I still, even with the weird settings and such, enjoyed it a fair amount. I just hope she, as well as all the writers, get better with season 3. Season 2 as a whole wasn't that good in my opinion, compared to season 1. The only episode I truly disliked was Hearths Warming Eve. That episode was horrid, should never have happened.
@DoDo: Well somepony doesn't have any Hearthwarmings Eve Spirit, lol. But really? I mean not saying your wrong or anything, but I've never heard people disliking that ep, Personally I find the overall Anti-Hate message of the ep reather well, heartwarming, lol. But hey to each pony their own, everyone has the right to like & dislike whatever they want. And personally I say Season 2 is way better then season 1, don't get me wrong their both great, but season 1 wasn't that much diffrent from your general ei show (other then the fact it arguably had better writing then other ei stuff lol) But season 2 really amped things up we got alot of character development & world building, which is always a good thing imo. @Yam: Oh I see. @PhatBoyFresh: Agreed PYHD is also one of my favorite episodes of season 2. Fluttershy is just as if not more entertaining when she's overly assertive as she is when she's shy, at least imo anywo.
