Posts like this, putting on doubt the bases the world is moving on, give me the feel of watching history like in a history book. That references slurs and attitudes as "once valid", like books talking about doctors using leeches or skull trepanations to heal melancholy/depression. "Hey look! in 1930 Germans segregated people based on their beliefs or social group! and that became a world wide trend!" I don't actively browse for clop pics, when some appears on my screen I live and let live, unless it appears on Google images with safe search activated, then I feel ticked off and b***h at Google's crew... A kid would crash with that, and he enlarges it, and parents see, and parents did set some kind of filtering off the shelf program (that not blocks MLP stuff 'cause, well, it's MLP stuff) referenced parents would be ticked at all the brony comunity... That's not good. P.S. I'm not English natural, but tried extra-hard to tell my point clear.
Before I start, I would like to state that I'm a musician. I play 5 (Soon to be 6) instruments, I study music theory, I write my own music, I arrange music, I make chiptunes, I review music, and I'm part of the staff over at Every Pony Sings. When it comes to music, I know what I'm talking about. It has come to my attention that the radio here on Every Pony is really bad. Like, REALLY bad. There's a major lack of diversity, as all of the songs are from the same genre. To make it even worse, they're poorly written, lack strong melodies, and have way too much language. Unless the bad songs only play while I tune in, the radio here sucks. So here's the question of the day: How can we improve it? Well first of all, where did all of this music come from? Do you guys just accept any song you're given? If so, that would be the biggest problem right there! Here's an idea: We should completely clear out every song on the radio. Then, we should open up a thread suggesting artists to add. I heard a song on our radio the other day that was really bad. I heard this electronic beat, and it started building up. When it got to the top, it stops, and then you hear somebody scream the f-bomb. What the heck guys? This is a problem that can easily be fixed. I want everybody to prepare a list of the best pony artists and songs. If the staff accepts this idea, we can email these musicians to get permission and make a good radio here on Every Pony.
Well, most of our music sorta got shafted when we went from a paid livestream account to a basic one. We had more stuff than this, but now we're on a data limit until further notice really. So there isn't much we can do. And believe it or not, songs with swearing and stuff was the stuff of huge discussion back in the day. Anyone from back then will certainly remember that whole fiasco.
I don't really think there is a limit on quality, just the overall amount, so if you chip away at the not so good stuff, this leaves more room for the good stuff, yeah that makes sense. Oh and then there is shoutcast which I am still paying for by the way, but same thing, quality control, I know I was never qualified for it, just played what the viewers wanted to hear.
Well, I have a complaint myself, though I rarely go there, the fact I can't listen to it on mobile kinda irks me. I dunno if you guys can help that, but if you could that'ld be great.
- Moved to Radio Discussion - If you're using Android you need an app like Winamp to play the file (which you can download from the radio page), or download this and search for 'Everypony' with the app. If you have an iPhone, there is a general Shoutcast app you can use. And yes, we recently had a transfer of Livestream ownership and much of the content was lost for some unknown reason. We're currently in the process of re-uploading it, but that will take some time.
I've seen some other radio sites have a voting system for each song as it plays so the listeners can either vote up or down the song. I know this would probably require a LOT of work on Mike's part, but it would let the listeners pick what they think is good or bad and it would be easier to go by consensus instead of trying to "guess" what the listeners want. And for a starting point of what to upload, maybe research what is already popular on the other radio stations around? Give the playlist a clean wipe and start out again with the "good" stuff.
Another issue that you have to factor in is that an overwhelming number of brony musicians make some form of electronic music. This makes balancing out genres incredibly one sided, so we do the best with what's available. There are also some musicians where you're lucky if you can get any song out of them that doesn't contain any swearing (i.e. Yelling At Cats). So to try and upload only clean songs, we'd have to find some sort of balance on the swearing (trying to cut songs with more adult references was also talked about way back when), but this would mean we wouldn't carry some artists songs at all then. A few of the songs with swearing or adult references also happen to be extremely popular, which is another potential issue.
Actually it was dropped back to the free plan after an ownership transferral, which, if I remember correctly, allows only 1GB of archive data. Currently we are over the limit, having approximately 1.8GB of data.
It's 10gb for the archive, and we're 8 gb over (2.68 dollars) About that song, I don't think I have heard that. And we use the songs from brony musicians, but what gets played it what we choose. I'm not sure where the song with the curse is...
Could we not find one we could repurpose? Or at the very least, find someone we can ask to make such a thing?
I feel so, SO extremely stupid right now for not noticing the missing zeros while writing my post. So sorry about that ._. *hides in a dark corner in shame* As for that voting system, I'm no good at site coding stuff, so bear with me if I'm talking silly things. Can't you make a variable for each song, then make two buttons that gives or takes from the value? You could also probably make a condition that checks if there's been a vote from your IP address or something. If "already voted" is true, don't add/take anything.
Alright, there's a few things I wanna adress real quick: We've never had a "paid" livestream account. We've always been on a free account, we only paid what we had over the 10GB limit, that hasn't changed ever. We did lose a lot of music when our channel was tken down in August last year though. Sadly there's not much that can be done about that, atleast on the livestream. Shoutcast is available on mobiles though. Livestream only offers mobile support for paid channels and a premium LS channel is about 350$ per month. I think we'd wanna avoid that. It hasn't worked to well in the past, why would it now? Just my 2c
