after reading cupcakes, sweet apple massacre, and other various fanfics i have noticed after almost every one of the i threw up out of disgustion. i would like to kill whoever wrote sweet apple massacre, that image is in my head.
I haven't read the latter, but Cupcakes is intended to be tongue-in-cheek. It's not meant to be taken seriously, and that's probably why there's so many jokes in it. Plus, it's kind of badly written. I'm not going to bother reading all of the alternate endings and other authors' writings of it because it probably takes away from the ideas of the others. Cupcakes is tame compared to some of the manga I read/have read. I've accidentally seen details of the latter fic, but based on what I've heard, it's probably not something I'll ever read.
Wow, You want to kill who wrote Sweet Apple Massacre. Now I want to read it. I am a fan of messed up fics. I am subscribed to many people who read them MLP and other stuff and a Cupcakes reading is the reason I became a brony. Who knows maybe Sweet Apple Massacre may be too terrible even for me, we will see once I get though my fanfic list that includes, normal, shipping and grimdark fics. btw I have never read a non grimdark fic before I became a brony, so this show has opened me up to how wonderful positive nice canon fics can be.
I agree with the OP. I haven't read to many fanfics, but my favorite ones have been ones that mimic the simple style and themes of the show. I don't like the ones that stray into Tom Clancy plots. In fact, I think fan-made comics tend to bring me the most satisfaction overall since they convey a simple enough theme and usually good-spirited take on the show, like this one: Spoiler: Click
I don't mean so sound rude here everypony but it's a made up story in text form. Theres are far worse visual stuff in movies & games. :derpe:
I was surprised that Past Sins wasn't labeled as Dark or Sad, but that's probably because of the complete theme encompassed. I like the romance stuff with the comedy. While 'The Ballad of Twilight Sparkle' is one of my favorites because of this, I enjoyed Spark a bit more, but the epilogue chapter of Spark is what started me writing. It's too true. :\
I'm reading past sins right now. I love the story so far. It is pulling in heart strings I didn't know could be pulled. Not all fanfics are bad, you know you don't have to read the crazy stuff right, dawn.
It's the internet, and if something exists people have to twist it. Going on anti-twisted campaigns and showering the original creator in attention, positive or negative, only just instigates them to do more (in case the CrookedTrees haters haven't realized it yet, they've been trolled, pretty hard too) so the only real way to deal with them is to just collectively ignore them. The only thing we can really do is push to prevent sites like Equestria Daily from feeding these people by presenting their stories, the fact that Cupcakes got up there is pretty dissapointing, but doing that in any visual manner just pushes them to do it more (since you're providing them pageviews and attention in the process).
But Why deny the writer a chance to express themselves. I didn't like it, but that doesn't mean someone else might like it. Sure "cupcakes" is a little over the top. That was his/her version of the MLP universe. I have a Power ring/ MLP fanfic. That's how I like the universe. Rashall has Warhammer/MLP becuase that's what he likes. Everyone has different likes and dislikes and I don't feel someone should be ignored because some people don't like it. For the record, I hate "cupcakes". It truly made me start to feel sick. I will ignore it, you can ignore it, but the fans of it can do what ever they want with it.
Hmm, I totally agree with this thread. Cupcakes = ...well, I didn't think it was too bad. Probably because I read the alternative ending by... milesfox or something like that? :derpe: S.A.M. = NOW THAT WAS DISGUSTING. ...they need to warn you before they post that. And the rest of the grimdark, was pretty bad as well. The light-grimdark I can handle, and enjoy though... (I wouldn't put those as Grimdark at all though) My opinion: Meh. The real problem is when people post to the Grimdark without a good enough description of it... I got trolled to read my first one. ("you can never trust anyone" or something like that was the title) ...so, yeah. I'm a bit biased about that. S.A.M was a shock to me as well, but even worse.
Well also note it's partially your fault for reading it in the first place, it's not like no one warned you -BUT- normally in most fan groups gore stories are kept locked in the cellars of the fandom and not brought out to the forefront for all the world to see.
Someone here asked me to find them the S.A.M story. I knew what it was, I haven't read it and never will. But I stand by my last post, if that's how they see the universe then that's cool, just don't shove it in my face. I can't even listen to the "cupcakes" songs on my ipod. Not the Pinkie version, but the fan made stuff. Makes me sick to the stomach.
... Well, to anyone that read Cupcakes, I found this helpful... http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7132369/2/A_Precious_Rainbow Eeyup. the alternate ending by milesprower06. Somehow it fixes things for the most part in my opinion. :derpe:
Personally I think Fooz's Cupcakes songs are pretty awesome breakcore. Really the idea is to make sure you don't take everything too seriously, because normally people who are making those don't take it very seriously themselves (otherwise the scenario wouldn't exist being so out of character for the show in the first place). You have to make sure to separate fanom from canon, like how some people are going to have to learn soon enough that just because they like how Luna was expressed in a certain fanfic doesn't mean she has to be expressed that way in the show (*is already hiding in the bunker from the shizstorm that is sure to come after the Luna episode*).
The problem with Grimdark fics in general is that people think that Grimdark = Gore, and while there usually is some sort of grim reality shown in the work, the good ones are all about the mind, and about truly breaking the spirit of the character and reader. A good example of this is Rainbow Factory. Gore? Yes, but very little. However, when I read the thing all the way, I was thoroughly grimdark'd. Especially the ending.
Yes, it falls into the artistic expression 'category' for me. Many bits of art that are disliked (Clop, Furry, Hentai) are just that: art. I can appreciate their quality and detail where most would simply turn their heads in disgust, like it's something vile that hasn't been seen before. Cupcakes is vile, but it is what it is, even if far too many people misinterpret its idea. I was always under the impression that "Grimdark" simply meant a dark and sad theme. Most prominently, I felt it meant oppression. I'm a bit afraid to delve into the psychological aspects of writing, but two of my unpublished chapters of TQP cover two different minds. In their rewrite, it will explore cause and effect of circumstance much more. I'm only afraid to explore because writing can bring out the most sinister side of me, but the double edge to that is my strongest theme in everything: Hope.
