The range of possible answers is huge. If your budget goes as high as seven hundred dollars, you could get Sibelius 7.0 and be done with it. But you'd probably want to add a MIDI keyboard at least, for extra $$$. But you can try a demo version of Sibelius for free for 30 days. It's super flexible and aimed at serious composition and scoring but could be used for more basic tasks as well.

A lot of the equipment you'd buy is defendant on the type of music you are trying to create, if you're thinking like scores or orchestral music sibelius is all well and good (for composing, it's definitely not for finished products unless you're trying to print out to be performed) but if you want to produce like say rock or electronic music it's not going to do you much good.

So what are you thinking of producing?

One thing you can try is Fruity Loops. There are 1000s of tutorials on the net for it.

I've been a pro producer & artist for years and if you wanted to go full wack i'd say go for cubase 6 but your looking at a lot of Money. Fruity loops is a great start as its not limited to what VSTs you can use and you can get some great tracks out of it. I know a few pro producers that use it too.

If you want any in depth advice on what to buy - just PM me :)

    FL Studio (aka Fruity Loops)
    Ableton Live
    Cubase
    Logic
    ProTools

No idea about compatibility with any of those.

I personally have Ableton Live Suite 8 as well as access to FL Studio 10 (?), but never used the latter. Because I have absolutely no experience prior to using Ableton recently, I find it very complicated. However, it comes with a humongous instrument package and a variety of effects. It's a great program, but the interface isn't particularly appealing (I hate the color scheme so much).

I've made some interesting stuff with Ableton, but my lack of understanding of the program slows me incredibly. It's considered the absolute best program when it comes to workflow, though. Great program, I'm just a noob with it.
