I have been drawing some pony art myself and decided to try some different softwares. What software do you use/recommend?

For beginners, I recommend MS Paint.
It doesn't have all of the features of some of the other programs, but it's the easiest to learn.

If you have some experience with digital art, I would suggest Paint.NET.
It has a ton of cool features, and it's free.

Similar to what Ridley said, I would suggest starting with MSPaint, assuming you use Windows. The next step would be Paint.NET. After that, I would suggest GIMP, a free Adobe Photoshop-like program. It's rather tough to use, but definitely the most rewarding.
Best advice: Start easy and build your way up.

    Other art:
In case you want to make vector art, try out Inkscape, yet another free program. It allows you to draw points and to make lines between them.

If you are insane like me, you can try out ImageMagick, a free command-line program that allows drawing, file conversions, and, most importantly, automation. I use it to create animated gifs. Still, the learning curve is steep, and I wouldn't recommend it for actual drawing. Perhaps one can use it for applying image filters.

I personally prefer a mix of Paint 98 and Paint XP.
