(Reason why i didn't post this in the Visual art forum is because it is ART as in a whole. Visual art is just part of Art. Art is beyond that - music, acting, etc.) As you all know, Art is subjective and is defined and presented by every individual in a unique way and light; I've noticed not everything i see is considered "art" by all; a group thinks it is, another one doesn't. I've noticed that people tend to disagree a lot when it comes to photography being art (Especially if they're talking about Nude photos (referring to them as porn (I am one of them as well since all i see in it is a picture that "tickles" your hormones))). Whereas I've also noticed that most traditional works (both drawings and paintings) are looked at as art by everyone (nobody denies that it is art). I, as a traditional drawer, also look at traditional drawings and paintings as the greatest visual art possible. Music (as art) also varies from person to person; and it seems, unlike visual art, that there ain't, in this beautiful world, one single genre that appeals to everybody. For instance, one who listens to Pop most likely won't like classical and Rock music. One who listens to classical most likely won't like Rap, etc.. Also, I've always liked and respected music as art more than visual art (even though i draw more than i compose) because it does have something magical in it; it draws up more emotions than visual art. Also, there's more variety in it in my opinion (and the general audience does like music more than visual art as well, i guess.). What i found quite strange is that I respect EVERY composer out there (before 21th century); unlike the visual artists, etc. Enough about me, let's hear your words! The question what i am asking you is "What is art?" Define it as great as you can, so we could (at least) try to find a common viewpoint on art. Here's my definition: Art is the subjective expression of one's emotions, which wakes up emotions in other people, depending on the way of reception (visually, acoustically, etc).
Art? Hm, difficult. I suppose it contrasts with science, which is knowing. If that is supposed, then art is creating. For example, linguistics is a science. However, conlanging, which is creating languages, is an art. The science of linguistics, the art of conlanging.
To me, anything that has a connection to me, whether emotionally or to my own personality, is art. It's different for everyone, one man's vision of art is different to that of another man. ~The way in which we see art, is the true key to unlocking our imagination.~
Emotion, all art needs emotion to fuel it. Be it pictures or music. Example- These two songs Our hearts Collide/ baby "Our Hearts Collide" This song with no words brings me more emotion then Bieber can. I understand what he is trying to do. I feel like in this age of music, it's less about real emotions and more about "fake" emotions that the artist make the person feel. (<does that even make sense) As far a drawings go. Emotion is a lot easier to put into it I believe. I don't understand modern art. Modern art I'm not saying I hate it, I just don't understand it. I think all it needs to be called art is real emotions. Ones that the artist puts in and emotions that can be sent over to me, whether it's painting or music. I think I asked this in the Question to a Question thread or at least I planned on doing it.
art? hmmm... hard question... is everything, is something and is nothing, is complex and very simple, is living, dying, loving, hating, concerning, letting it go, holding it, is expressing your emotions in a creative way or simply making random stuff when your mind is blank, is creativity and its the lack of it, is the singular and the mainstream, is the *squee!* on the streets or the lady on the castle, the hero on battle and the monster on the closet, the beautiful, the ugly and that stuff that you simply dont understand but you know that makes you feel better, or worse or just weird. Art my friend, is everything, its something and its nothing. P.S.:sorry if i tryied to sound too deep or smart here, i just wrote what i think.
Art is anything that elicits a human emotional reaction in the form of sadness, happiness, joy, anger, fright, etc. Under this definition, most books, movies, TV shows, Video Games, and so on are art.
I would agree with your definition, Jaretauren. On this same note, I hate artistic elitists, especially those that cannot create their own art, because they are excluding things that others find subjectively appealing as "lower" forms of art than others, where, in my definition, art can be macaroni art by a 3 year old and still hold as much or more power than something painted by the "greats".
To me, art has always been something that connects well with an audience that is well constructed, well thought out, and well designed. Doesn't matter if it's a painting or a war strategy; if something inspires someone, it's art.
To me, Art is Whatever you want it to be. Art comes from the Heart and Mind that the visuals on what you see, is your Way of expressing on the beauty of Art, that we may not be able to describe it but Show it in are minds that what we see in a image on what you Draw or Listen to wonders on what you see in Art. Art is Life and without it, life would be Bland and Lifeless.
This is a great point. It is a communication of an understanding of reality that a person makes to create a visceral connection with others in a medium that offers more range of expression than language. I even like Rand's "An artist recreates those aspects of reality which represent his fundamental view of man's nature. ".
"Art" ... is within the eye of the beholder. One cannot generate a definition for art as it is different from person to person, everyone around the world. (I did a presentation on this for general studies, I had time to think about it)
Art is to create. All we create is Art, that's to say, reading, writing, painting, drawing, dancing, music composing, taking pictures,...
Art, to me is...taking small pieces of anything and to put them together to form something from thought and imagination.
