I'm not really sure if this was the right section to post this in, but, I just want to know what everyone thinks of "self-inserting" for anyone who doesn't know. Self inserting is when the author puts themselves as a character in their story. For an example, I actually do it all the time. I'm a horror movie director for youtube (with sims 2) and I have a character who's based off of me who appears in almost everyone of my horror movies. ^ Real me and my sims 2 character who appears in my horror videos on youtube. ^ Me in my bandanna (which is actually my youtube trademark) and the ponified version of myself. I actually wanted to try making my pony version of myself in Gmod so i can use him for MLP videos, but i cant figure it out for the life of me. Anyway, a lot of people complain about it and think it's annoying. I don't really understand why so many people do though. but I just want to know, what's your opinion on self inserting? share your thought
Self-insertion is a tricky thing to do well. Making yourself the hero of your story usually comes off as annoyingly narcissistic. However, a small cameo appearance is fine, when it is done correctly.
I agree with Ridley. You see Quentin Tarantino making appearances in his movies, but they are all very minor roles Spoiler: spoiler with the exception of Jimmy in Pulp Fiction perhaps
Self insert yourself all you want. I see no problem with it at all, the issue is that a lot of people don't want anything bad to happen to them in a story. So if they self insert they seem always usually seem to become a Mary Sue. Where you have everyone loving them or the saving the day every single time. That's the real issue to me, the Mary Sue aspect.
I am too boring to want to insert myself into any creative works...unless I was writing about a boring person, mhm.
well, with self inserting, you can change stuff about yourself to not make you seem boring. like in my MLP fan story, I made myself a psycho killer pony who comes to ponyville looking for his dead uncle. Obviously that's not true for me in real life. hahahaha and I understand why it'd get annoying to have yourself as the hero in every story
