"Celestia being a deity is strictly fanon"... ...I always thought Celestia was this universe's version of God. If she isn't, who is? Does this universe have a God? Is there a Pony Heaven? Where do Ponies go after they die? What is the Pony religion? Do they pray to Celestia? Or the other alicorns?
The ponies worship a goddess called Faust, who is usually represented as a white Alicorn with a maroon mane and a quill and inkwell cutie mark.
You fools, there is only one true god in this universe!
Luna and Celestia aren't goddesses? They are personally responsible for the day-night cycle, are over a thousand years old, and have been ruling over Equestria without opposition from the public almost that entire time (well, 'Tia has anyway). Oh, and Luna/Nightmare Moon can survive unassisted on the moon for a thousand years. What do you have to do to be counted as a Deity in this universe!?
Luna and Celestia aren't omnipotent, indestructible beings, but Greek gods could be killed, yet they were still seen as gods. If not gods, they're definitely godlike.
They could be indestructible, to be fair; neither has died and they don't seem to show any signs of ageing. Could also explain why Nightmare Moon had to be exiled to the Moon; it was the only way to get rid of her (Although it could also be that Celestia didn't want to kill her Sister. Or that it's a kids show.)
I agree that Equestria doesn't seem to have any conventional Deities. Other countries in that Universe might do though.
Well, there are those that believe that a powerful being known as Fausticorn created the ponyverse as we know it. There are also those who believe that the ponies started as rather big and chubby versions of themselves and slowly evolved into the ponies of today. There's also the Church of Hasbrology, and though indubitably powerful and influential, the canonicity of their teachings is questionable. In short, we may never know for sure.
