I've noticed in my ramblings about the community that so few people actually liked Sombra as a character or a villain. Arguments of no screen time and no lines, while valid, are still short. I think Sombra was awesome and looked pretty cool. He may have had little screen time but he was still probably the biggest actual threat that any of the mane six have faced thus far and he could still come back. And let's not forget how easily some of these other villains were easily pushed aside. Chrysalis got beaten by the very thing she set out to have, Discord was over confident in his own abilities and gave in to Celestia who encased him in stone and then again to Fluttershy who had encased him in stone. To me Discord sounds like an emotional pushover who can only rely on trickery and deceit to win, and Nightmare Moon didn't try hard enough, she could've done a lot more to stop the girls. Sombra managed to get through the shield Cadance had up, he managed to creep his way up to the palace and almost won because of how much the crystal ponies feared him. That is power, fear that lasts for a thousand years and is remembered like it was yesterday. I think Sombra is best villain and I hope he returns to spread more fear and fight Celestia in the epic battle we all wished to see in A Canterlot Wedding.
I don't see how he was such a big threat to be honest. He had no character, no lines, hardly any screentime. They didn't build a character for him. They didn't even give him a reason for being the bad guy. There was no plot for taking over the crystal empire, he just wanted to take over for whatever reason. Nightmare Moon wanted to bring an eternal night as revenge for being sealed in the moon for 1000 years. Discord... Well i suppose Discord didn't really have a reason either, but that's why he's called Discord, the God of Chaos and Disharmony, isn't it? With the way they built his character, he didn't need a reason. Sombra was just "RAWR EVIL LOL!!" And THAT is why people don't like him when compared to previous villains. Even S3 Trixie was considered a better villain than he was.
I liked King Sombrero. Maybe it was just the lack of screen time and lines, I suppose it would limit fan made content of him, but that didn't really slow down the background ponies. Hmm... Maybe he's just the scapegoat for the villains, which I could also see. Just like how of the mane 6, Rarity is my least favorite.
Personally, I like that there was really no back story and that he had few lines. He lets his actions do the talking. The fact that not much is known about his past makes him all the more menacing.
Some people don't need a better reason than that. He was still powerful enough to conquer the whole crystal empire on his own without any apparent help. He was also able to hold onto the entirety of the empire until Celestia and Luna banished him and even then he still made the whole thing disappear. There is so much of the story we don't know that the stuff we do know should be intimidating.
I liked him. He didn't really need an elaborate backstory, many lines or a huge explanation of his motives. He was just this ever present menace lurking in the back waiting to strike, and he was perfectly fine like that.
I've never heard of anyone taking issue with him before now. I haven't heard any praise ether mind you, but I have yet to witness the Sombra hate in question.
Never noticed any Sombra hate to be honest (eh, neither much praise for that matter ). I like him though, but I like Discord/Chrysalis more. I hope he might return sometime.
I wouldn't go so far as to call Discord a "pushover." He was over-confident though, that was his folly. I was actually kinda bummed when I saw him "converted" (more or less) in season 3. He was an excellent villain in my opinion. Certainly my favorite l3 As for Sombra, I consider him a victim of circumstance. He looked like an excellent villain, but the writers sorta failed at letting him do his villainous villainy stuff. It felt like he was just this impending.. thing.. Like, "Yeah, he's coming alright, you just watch, the second he gets a chance, he'll totally attack, just wait for it.. wait for it....." It was a let-down to me.. Instead of watching the mane 6 pacifying the crystal ponies with, of all things, a rinky-dink carnival, we could have seen the crystal ponies take a stand against their foe. Heck, the mane 6 had quite an exciting battle in the season 2 finale, so why then couldn't they have rallied the crystal empire and faced Sombra properly? It would have been a lot more exciting that way. Sombra really got gypped by the writers. He was packed with potential energy, but barely got to use any of it.
Just gonna point this out. Sombra was actually a good guy. Think about it. The Crystal Empire casts emotions out to all of Equestria. When Sombra was not in control and the Crystal Empire was happy, love was spread around Equestria. What was attracted to Equestria because of love? The changelings. SOOO my theory is that Sombra was one of those badly misunderstood good guys, and by taking over the Crystal Empire, saved Equestria from the Changelings attention.
Conspiracy! Well, doesn't look like he did a very good job at protecting Equestria then. *points at the ending of season 2 *
Overall, I did like the episode. I really liked the second song where they are planning the events. However, I stand by my opinion that it could have been so much better. Just my 2 cents there
I think Sombra kinda got the short end of the stick as far as writing for villains goes. That, and a lot of people don't see him as a good villain because he wasn't really physically present most of the time, nor did he actually confront any of the Mane 6 in either episode. Nightmare Moon was kinda the same way, she only confronted the Mane 6 right towards the end, then was soundly defeated before she got much of a chance to do anything. Chrysalis, imo, was a bit of a moron. Not only did she tell them her whole elaborate plan at the first opportunity, but she also laughed at the notion that the ponies could defeat her with such a inconsequential emotion such as love (a la Voldemort) even though her own powers and life source are derived from the very same emotion. So yeah, Discord is best villain. Not only did he confront the Mane 6, he also gave them an extremely hard time, managed to turn the whole world upside down, and he's voiced by John de Lancie. I mean c'mon...you just can't beat that. Although...now he's not really a villain anymore, is he? bah...
Sombra didn't have any developed personality, except for "GRARR CRYSTAHLS", which is unfortunate. If he's resurrected by that horn of his, then maybe they can improve him somehow. For now, making him a Latin party animal is the best we can do.
Absolutely! Discord is best villain! All the more reason I was depressed when I saw them attempt a "reforming Discord" episode. I'm convinced we haven't seen the last of his mischief though. There's no way he'll be squeaky clean. There's bound to be an episode in the future where he's pulling pranks on other characters in the show. Heck, he might even team up with Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash at some point. Now that I think about it, maybe they can have an April Fools Day episode where Discord makes the holiday his own and uses it as an excuse to create some sporting chaos for the mane 6. It would be more like friendly competition since he's "reformed" now, but there would definitely be shenanigans, and I'm all for that
