Her eyes were closed, and she was quiet for a moment. “Will you tell me before you leave?” she said after a while. “When you decide to move on? You won’t just disappear in the middle of the night, right?”
"I never plan on leaving," he told her gently, slowly brushing her hair back. "Being here with you and your siblings makes me so happy, June."
Her eyes opened and she was quiet for a moment. “But things happen,” she said softly, looking up at him. “Things change faster than we expect them to, and...” She paused before shaking her head. “I just want to be able to say goodbye before you go.”
"If," he began, his gaze soft, "in the very unlikely event that I decide to leave, I will let you know, that way you can say goodbye," he told her, a tilting his head slightly. "Okay?"
This seemed to provide her with a huge amount of relief, so much that tears filled her eyes. She nodded and buried her face in his chest. “Okay.”
He closed his eyes, his arms gentle around her as they both began to fall asleep, the serene countryside outside peaceful and calm; everything was good. -END-
