Autism Speaks: Literally Hitler

Maybe I've seen too much of their advertising, but wouldn't a lot of people be helped if there was a cure for autism?

Also don't compare autism speaks to NSDAP. That's insulting to the people who survived the horros of the holocaust.

I agree that Autism Speaks have gotten their approach to the problem wrong, but Autism can be a real problem for some people (I mean those with severe autism who can't look at or talk to people), and I think likening the search for a treatment to attempted genocide is a bit strong.
They should definitely have more people directly affected by autism in their command structure, and should probably spend more of their resources helping those with severe autism deal with it in the immediate future, but they're not an analogue for a crazed racist mass murderer.

YOU don't want to be fixed. If you want to have autism then be my guest. But don't you think that there is a few people with autism who wished that they didn't?

I've never met a single Aspie or Autie who wanted to be "cured."

I hate speaking for other people, but I've talked to enough people on the spectrum that I can try to explain the general consensus.

Autism makes life more difficult. There's no denying that.
It makes us act weird, and makes it harder to get along with other people.

It also makes us unique. Our minds don't work the same as a neurotypical person's, and it allows us to see the world in a way that a normal person can't even imagine.
I can't explain it, so I won't even try to, but it's great.

We all have bad days; the kind of days when we wish we could just be normal like everyone else.
We hate the fact that we were forced by an accident of nature to be freaks and outcasts.
But we get over it.
We remember that autism is a part of who we are. It's what makes us, "us."

And we wouldn't trade that for anything.

1. How many people with autism have you meet?
2 how many of them were high functioning and how many of them were low functioning?

1. I don't have the exact numbers, but several dozen in the real world and hundreds online.

2. Most were high-functioning.

And yes, I can see where you're going with this.
The problem is that if there's ever a "cure" invented for autism, a lot of parents aren't going to care whether their kid is high-functioning or low-functioning.

I've worked with a bunch of children with Autism. I have a number of friends who identify as being somewhere on the Autism spectrum and my little brother has Autism. Their lives are rough... but that's only because they learn things and understand things differently than most people. Even their bodies, which can be physically different since Autism is a Neurological disorder, can be different, but "different" doesn't mean "less."

I have no doubt that there are people with Autism who sometimes feel as if they want to be non-Autistic. It could happen; when the world doesn't understand you, when life gets you down and you're having a rough time, it's easy to wish that things were different. But I have never once spoken to an Autistic person who had any permanent desire to get rid of their Autism. It's a part of who they are on every level. To want to get rid of it in truth would be like wanting to get rid of your entire worldview, your emotions, your place in the human race.

I'm saddened by the fact that Autism makes the lives of the people I care about harder. But I don't think less of them for it, and I certainly don't think they wish things were any other way.

I have Atypical Autism, and I essentially feel exactly the same way. As much as I wished that I had a normal life and childhood, it's essentially who I'am. To want to get rid of it in truth would be like wanting to get rid of your entire worldview, your emotions, your place in the human race. And I'm a reallly really quirky person as well who loves being weird, throwing that away and conforming what is essentially my own soul would serve no purpose.
