Earn it, don't deserve it.

So, as I believe a few of you already know, I'm a boy scout. I've been fairly inactive for say... 2-3 months. Anyway, I came back tonight, and there was a new senior patrol leader. For all of you who don't know, he's the scout in charge, and since there is a new SPL, there would be a new assistant (he appoints them, on the spot, when elected). This SPL just happened to pick a... I dunno, stupid one? Lol, anyway, I'm chatting it up with the scoutmaster (the adult in charge, we're pretty tight) and this kid (yes, a little kid) comes up to me and tells me, NOT ASKS ME, to get into formation. I told him to chill and that I'd be right there. He then grabs my arm and tries to drag me. Literally, this kid is stupid. I'm twice his size. I pushed him off and started to turn back to the scoutmaster, and as I was turning (keep in mind, the room was quiet at this point, but they didn't know of our little 'confrontation' yet) he reaches up and slaps me.

Slaps me.

Anyway, in the end, I had him by the throat in a single hand as I spoke to him. When I get like this, my voice isn't really normal. It's more of a bellow. When I let him go, he just ran off crying. He's lucky I didn't slam his head in the ground...

So, what's the point of this? Well, if you read the title, you probably have already guessed it. You earn respect. Nobody should walk up to me and expect me to treat them like the commander-in-chief, I don't know them, I don't know what's they've done. They have not earned it. He didn't do anything for that position. All he ever did was whine, and, at the end of the day, the ASPL does nary a thing.

F*ck if all my blog posts have something to do with an encounter that gets a little too physical.

    That's a two-way street you know, and grabbing a kid by the throat and yelling at him is not the best way to earn respect. :I

    Good on you. Sometimes people need to learn that just because they're above you doesn't mean they can treat you like trash. It's the reason the Americans revolted against the British. Why slaves revolted. Why Martin Luther King Jr. led the civil rights movement.

    Though next time, try not to grab him by the throat. That can be a bit too damning for you.

    That's what the point of scouting is: learning leadership skills. The kid needs to learn them. Demanding obedience is not good, and slapping a grown man is... pathetic.

    I'm not sure how I feel about what you did, though... Yeah, he "deserved it," but there was probably a better way to handle that. Did you get in trouble for that?

    I respect Mixo and Yami's opinion. I look back and I think maybe he didn't really deserve it. After all, he's just a kid. He may not know better.
    @Yami I've already earned my respect through more than 5 years of service to my troop. I'm not about to have some kid come in and undermine me. And I wasn't really yelling, my voice is just deep and the room echoes like crazy.
    @Ramza It wasn't directly on the throat. My right hand on his left shoulder, thumb on the Adam's Apple. There are things even I wouldn't push. What an onlooker might even find as funny is that I was the SPL before the SPL before the current one and that I'm an Eagle rank.
    @Mixo As you've probably inferred to my response to Yami, my boundaries are a little more extended.
    @Dicoma, he pulled me aside and said the same thing Mixo is basically saying. Said be a little more gentler next time. Personally, I hope there isn't a next time.

    In that case, doing what you did is a good way to lose respect, in my eyes. Yes he was a brat, but he's a little kid. You should control yourself better.
