I actually suggested the debate section some time ago as well. Thread was closed pretty fast for the same reasons the staff is now hesitant to go through with it. As for my opinion, it would be a good idea because debate threads like this already exist, but here's the issue. I can name two threads, one of which was closed several weeks ago because it got out of hand more than once. The other one is currently still open and is currently 22 pages long and counting, and Ramza has already mentioned several times that people need to keep their heads on straight when posting. All it takes is one saddlesore immature person to cause a flame war. If you go through with the debate section, i suggest you make a seperate user group of which the members are chosen by the staff. Only this user group will have access to the debate section. The point should be obvious. Staff members can pick those who are mature enough to handle a serious debate. Anyone not behaving can simply be kicked from the group.
As for the new face of EPR, i already sent you my suggestions on that. :derpe:

I like Rarit E's Idea a lot. It would keep the immature out who have a need to just ruin it for everyone.

We sure need a debate section that's for sure, the current topics are to dull. Some friendly debates would really liven this place up. Thats just me though I love debates

I'd also like to mention that I am on break from Site Moderation for right now, so if you have any problems with something, do not notify me, notify Zephyr, the community mods, or Foxy. They will take care of it.

I like Rarit E's idea too, but there is one flaw. Where do new members fit? Perhaps a signed agreement could be made in order to get access to the subforum, and if the person says something inappropriate or blatantly rude, or if they get completely butthurt over something someone said, they would be terminated for a certain number of days before they can appeal with a new agreement.

Whenever I see the word "debate", I think "competition of who is better at arguing". Whether or not that's the real intention, I don't know. So is it really that?

Any member, new or regular, could appeal to be put in the group of course. It'll just be up to the staff to decide.

I wouldn't make the debate thread, because, to put it very bluntly, we aren't mature enough.

That's kind of a black or white statement, isn't it? :-/

It wouldn't be a simple thread, it'd be an entire dedicated subforum. That way we can give it extra moderation features if needed, for example we can make the forum accessible to certain members only, or require posts to be approved before they're publically seen. That way we can keep a much firmer grip of control over it.

If you're aiming for posts to be approved before they're publically seen, you'd need alot more moderators (and i do mean ALOT), or very dedicated moderators with mobile access to the website who'd be willing to check the threads every several minutes of every hour of every day. And that's impossible to keep up.

You could say "Members can wait a few hours", but what's gonna happen then? Alot of members will be replying to the same comment in that time, all of them will be approved at the same time whenever a moderator checks the threads, and people suddenly have another dozen comments to reply to, which they'll only be able to reply to after another few hours, etc....

It's gonna be one big confusing mess if you do that. Comment approval is usually only used for websites where you need to reply to only one comment. (such as blogs) It's not exactly the perfect solution for a thread, in which the discussions constantly evolve.

My opinion on the debate thread is that you would need to mod this subforum heavily with the "approved posts before publicly seen" part. Personally, I'd do as I do with other threads that don't interest me - I wouldn't go in it.

Well, there are a few who can handle a good discussion. Maybe not necessarily a religious discussion because those are usually a pain, but a nice political discussion, or a discussion on corporate America. Sounds fun. :>

Is there a possibility of a trial period for this subforum? I know it doesn't seem to appeal much to the staff or a certain number of members, but there are those out there that would be much more active on the forums should there be an -option- for us to join the subforum. If you don't want to chat in it, no one will force you. It's just hard to find a brony forum out there that has a section that appeals to that certain demographic. Who knows, maybe the forum will be more of a success than anticipated. And if nothing else, a trial period, if unsuccessful, will at least silence those who thought it possible.
