I Think I've Had My Fill of Walmart

You read that right, friends. I'm done with this store and perhaps this company. A week and a half ago, I requested the 22nd off because that's the date of my beloved nephew's very first birthday party. I entered the request through our computer system as we must, but I also notified the supervisor and manager above me of the occasion and tried to impress upon them how important it was to me. I checked the system after getting back from lunch break today to find my request had been rejected. This, I fear, is the last straw for me. The straw that broke the camel's back, as it were.

I've had to miss every. single. holiday since becoming a cart pusher a year ago, and for the past 6 months, I've missed almost every weekend as well. To top it off, in the past year, I've been forced to work ALONE on Labor Day, Valentine's Day, July 3rd, the 4th of July, and most of Mother's Day, and that's just off the top of my head. I can't remember any others. I had to completely miss my brother's only first Father's Day. I had to miss my family's yearly Thanksgiving reunion because I was sleeping in preparation of working starting at 10PM that night to cover Black Friday. I had to miss my family's yearly get-together to exchange presents on Christmas Eve (we've always done it the Christmas Eve evening ever since before I was born). I had to miss any New Year's celebration because they had me working until 11PM that night. All I could do was sit with my parents and watch it on TV (granted, I'd have most likely done that anyway, but it's the principle here).

I've missed countless opportunities to spend time with my nephew because I work every weekend, and my brother and his wife only have time on the weekends. I've missed months of karaoke shows that my dad runs because I always work Sundays until 11PM. It's been difficult to arrange time to spend with friends as well because the days I have off are rarely convenient for anyone. I've had enough and I can't take it anymore.

I'm not quitting just yet, not until I get a chance to talk with my manager again. This is what's going to happen. One way or another, I'm going to my nephew's birthday party on the 22nd. Whether it's from the manager giving me the day off, or my quitting, that's really up to her at this point.

Now we reach the subject of searching for a new job. I'll be honest: I am HORRIBLY inept at job searching. It's why I ended up at Walmart in the first place. All I know how to do really is look at the classified section of the newspaper and fill out online applications for retail jobs. So if anyone can share any insight on how to go about job hunting properly, please do help me, as I don't know anything about it myself. Also, should anyone hear about a job opportunity (which would be weird, since very few of you live anywhere near me, but you never know), be sure to send it my way, eh?

    walmart is a crap company really. People never believe me when I say it. When my dog had surgery a few weeks ago they told me it isn't a vaild accuse. I didn't sleep that day, I had been up for more then 24 hours and they wanted me to work another 8.

    6 months ago I requested vacation, I was denied because another employee asked beofre me. Now jump ahead to this week and we have 3 people on vacation right now. Yeah that's really fair isn't it.

    I understand the crap walmart does Yami, hopefully your manager isn't a complete jerk, it's only 1 day you need right?

    Wal-Mart is a greedy corporate conglamorate. What do you expect? Flowers and Rainbows?

    Their customs for employees are arguably just as bad, if not worse than Japan's work ethic.

    And if you really consider your weight a problem, you could just put your mind to it and visit a gym every once in a while? Because if i remember correctly, that was one of the only reasons why you kept working there, right?

    I think it is a good choice Yami. Even though you might slow down on the weight loss

    But at least you won't be poorly treated again. I'm not good with job hunting though because I am only 15 :derpe:

    In my opinion, which should be taken with a grain of salt as I've never had a job, you are doing exactly the right thing.

    Because what I would do in this situation is:

    1. Go talk to the manager. Explain that I never get any days off. If he says you're exaggeration, tell him to look up how much you've worked.
    2. If the manager flat-out refuses to listen, say you'll quit if he won't negotiate. You sound like a hard worker, and managers don't like to lose those, even though cart pusher wouldn't be a hard position to fill (no offence, Yami).
    3. If he still refuses to do anything, then follow through and quit.

    Unless you think that you need to keep that job. In that case I wouldn't go to steps two and three.

    And as for job searching, I am as luckless as you, my friend. I've applied at...*counts*...at least 8 places that should be easy to get jobs at, like McDonald's, the Public Library, etc., in the last 5 months. None of them even considered me. I didn't get even an interview for a single one.

    And personally Yami, i'd love to see you outside Walmart yelling "I've had enough!" while putting a patch of dirt and grass on your head as you walk away. ::S:


    Jokes aside, I agree with Legionbrony. You should follow those steps before doing anything drastic.

    The best, most sure-fire way to obtain a job is to be recommended for that job by a current employee for the business in question. If you know anyone who works anywhere where you would like to work, ask around and see if they're looking to hire anytime soon. If not, it pays to simply go from place to place and drop off/fill out job applications with contact information so that those employers can reach you when and if they do decide to hire.

    I dunno. It's harder than you might think, especially in the summer. Two months ago, our 3rd cart pusher quit because he couldn't handle the heat, and they still haven't found a replacement yet. That's actually another reason I'm going to quit. Only 2 cart pushers means I have to work 2 days per week alone, as does the other guy. Given the activity and heat of the summer, I find this unacceptable.
