Pony Kart's not happening

Alot of projects like this one (not just pony-related) usually end before they're finished, and most of the time for similar reasons. Either the creators lose interest, or they don't have the time/money for it.

I never get my hopes up for things like this, but it's a shame it (most likely) won't be finished.

But anyways, can't say I'm surprised. They were a group of students/grads who know how to code, liked ponies then got bored of ponies. Bigger and better projects await them. Good luck to them and wherever they decide to go.

And as far as the source code goes. Nobody will finish it -- I've seen it before and it's going to happen here. The sourceforge is very poorly organized and there is literally no development notes along with it, which is pretty vital for something like this, especially if you want to pick it up without having to dissect everything they've done.

The simplest thing for a new dev team to do is to pick up the assets and start from scratch.

You seem to possess an unnecessary grudge. Who cares if the game is modded. It's like any other game that users choose to mod. And in specifics to FIM would be cosmetic anyway.

My main concern isn't with it being modded, it's the fact that they're modding it out of spite.

There is one thing about modding a game, there is another about taking the game, shoving all of the hard work of the original developers aside, and making your 'own' game out of their source engine because they were unable to do what /you/ wanted for a variety of reasons.

Mods are supposed to be an all-access thing where people share their content with the dev's good wishes; these attempts to mod the Skullgirls engine (Which the new FiM project is using) will not only fail (Since it's not a moddable engine to prevent hacking) but also probably ruin the game for everyone else specifically because some selfish jerk has to toss away all of the hard work that they're putting into the game because they're a bit salty they don't get to play as a pastel coloured pony. Mods are meant to enhance the game experience, and very rarely are they purposefully meant to change the entire look/feel of the game.

It's like putting your heart and soul into a piece of art, and having someone take that art and scribble all over it. Not only is it disrespectful, but it's also underhanded and ridiculous.

I'm glad that they're using an un-moddable engine. If you guys want to go and make your own pone fightan geam, go right ahead. Just use your own content and stop being such a selfish jerk about it.

That's my 'grudge' with it.

As an individual who intends to get into the software and/or game development field, I see it differently. Developers, especially game developers need to accept and even in some cases encourage that people will configure and modify their games and/or softwares to their liking. In the end it's their choice, and it's a healthy one. If it's something that ruins experience for other players, then it would need to be properly addressed -- that's a different story. If it's something that's modded locally or strictly cosmetic with no harm to players who do want to play '100% legit', then whatever.

On a side note, but related -- modification and even complete forking of games and software is what drives the open sourced movement and brings forth fantastic side-projects or completely unique ones. I don't speak for the devs of the new FIM game and maybe perhaps they share a similar view as you and do not want users to modify their work and that's fine. As content creators they are the dictators of what can and can't be done with said content; but again, if it's something they will be up in arms about it's not a field they should be pursuing. That's my take on the whole thing.

I agree with you on that, except this is a fighting game.

Knowing what the FiM team is doing now, not only would the game need to have modified hitboxes to accomodate what is changing, (Since the original FiM had pretty much on-the-dot universal hitboxes, meaning that the area in which your character could be hit was approximately the same size as everyone else in the game, the new game will have differing hitbox sizes) they'd also have to rebalance the whole game to accomodate for this supposedly 'cosmetic' change.

Modding a fighting game is entirely different from modding something like Fallout or Call of Doge. It can ruin the feel or balance of the game in a heartbeat if it's done wrong.

I'm not saying that modding is a bad thing; there are plenty of modifications out there for Street Fighter like Street Fighter 4: Koryuu Edition that change the way the whole game is played for the sake of just having fun with it, or Project M which rebalances SSBB ENTIRELY to make it more competitive and fun for both casuals and competitive players. These have been accepted by the community as legitimate offshoots of official games and were made out of goodwill to show that the original products could be expanded upon and improved to either be more competitive (Project M) or more ridiculous and crazy. Getting a bit salty about a project being cancelled and saying 'I'm going to ignore the good wishes of the developers and try to completely modify their game to be filled with ponies' is stupid, and something done out of spite.

It's not modding that's bad, it's the principle in which it's being modded for. Now I'm sure that not everyone who wants to mod the game thinks like this, but it doesn't change the fact that it's incredibly selfish of those majority.

Essentially, it's saying 'This new product sucks because it doesn't have ponies any more. I'm going to put ponies in it to make it not suck.'

As devs it's their job to keep malintent from ruining player experience. Period. Whether it means accommodatimg or separating them somehow or completely blocking it out. That's why I said if people want to mod locally then let them have their fun. If the team is concerned about it extending online, all they would need to do is do server side verified check when you go to play online (as a minimal precaution). You have modded files? You're not going online. Can people get around that? You bet, if it's an unsophisticated system, but that's just the nature of the beast.

Don't get me wrong I hate things people do to ruin player experience, and if pone floods the game it will ruin honest players time. I get that, I never intended to say or want otherwise. I was just making the point that people can and will go about their ways if they're able to. But regardless how development team wants to handle it, they need to handle it in some fashion. The engine as we know is already really hard to do a lot with in terms of modification so I'm confident enough they're prepared to work it out.
