Rant of the week #7!

Today, I'm going be kicking around a very touchy subject. So, don't get overly flankhurt when you read it.

Suicide is selfish and rude. In my short life I've had too many people die over things that can be treated and helped. So I've pretty much dedicated myself to making such things not happen.

It all started with my grandfather. I'm pretty sure he killed himself while he was telling a story to me when I was little. He stopped mid sentence. "One second, dear, I gotta take a drink. My mouth gets dusty 'cause I'm old." I giggled a little. But after he took the drink he slowly fell out of the world. I didn't know what was happening, so I told my mom that I thought he was napping.

Nope. It blew a large hole through the family, and we drifted apart little by little. But I still got to see my favorite cousin and uncle every now and again.

Then my second aunt Patty died. Yes, second aunt. But we were tight.

While my mother was in a coma, a couple weeks in, Patty thought it was a little too much for her, and blew her brains out. I didn't know until a few years later. And my mom woke up from the coma, don't wanna leave you hanging on that.

Then a friend of mine, Kimmy, killed herself after her boyfriend broke up with her. (Boyfriend of 4 months, I may add). Her parents soon followed, as it was painful having a child go before them. Her brother was put into foster care.

I'm sorry if I sound whiny right now, I'm just throwing out examples of what suicide can do to families and friends.

And the last one was the last blow; my favorite uncle. I called him Uncah, but his name was Lawrence. On December 1st of '09, he suffocated himself in his car, on my grandmother's lawn. Thanks to this, my family has stopped recognizing the fact that my mother and I exist, and my grandmother is slowly going insane because she lost her favorite child.

Suicide is selfish, and if any of you think about kicking the chair, please talk to me. Odds are there is another way out. Don't go hurting everyone around you.

    As have I. Once it was my uncle that went, I saw what my cousin looked like. Then it all hit me.

    Wow...you've gone through some serious stuff...

    I'm really sorry. And I agree 110% Full on. Suicide is a silly idea.

    'Life can seem like it's a little bit rough, but the tough ponies never ever give up.'

    'You might be losing but you're not dead'

    'Hold it, hold fast keep going, never back down'

    These are the words I tell myself every time I feel ready to give in. Trust me on this, I will not be letting me, or any of my friends take their life so long as I'm around. Just as you've shown us, It's a bad idea.

    Thank you for that post, It was really interesting reading it.

    This was a very interesting post. While I have literally no "experience" when it comes to suicide, I do not agree with it. While the person who attempts suicide may think that they'll just end their problems, they create a whole new pile of problems for their friends and family.

    Suicide would be like, if you're mad at the world right? Or sad. Why do that? Why punish yourself when you could punish others?

    Well this has been a little sobering... Sigh... This isn't an unfamiliar topic to me as others have talked to e before about what suicide does to the families and friends of the deliberately departed. Utter devastation. Then... when you look back at the motives...... Borderline pettiness... An expression of... inexperience... lack of strength of the mind... Is that what we call discipline? Sometimes for lack of common sense... But how do these things happen to begin with? Are we raised to have such high expectations of life so that it doesn't seem worth it if we appear helpless and disillusioned?

    Hope I'm not derailing this too much by saying this but I remember someone--well, some people--say that if they were to stop believing in their religion and see themselves as helpless and unprotected in this seemingly dangerous world and insane society without any prospect of some paradise waiting after death to reward their deeds in life then they see no point in continuing.

    I feel that suicide is a very difficult topic to discuss, and it's one that I find challenging just because I can't relate. I can empathize when something bad happens to someone, but I find it tough to figure out how it could drive someone to wanting to end their life. I think you raised a lot of excellent points on the subject, many of which I agree with. I did see Cloud Atlas a while back, and I'm not spoiling anything by saying a character commits suicide in the film. The quote that they give regarding suicide is certainly a side I haven't seen before, but I can see it as a way to rationalize the act.

    Here's the quote: "A true suicide is a paced, disciplined certainty. People pontificate, 'Suicide is selfishness.' Career churchmen like Peter go a step further and call it a cowardly assault on the living. Oafs argue this specious line for varying reason: to evade fingers of blame, to impress one's audience with one's mental fiber, to vent anger, or just because one lacks the necessary suffering to sympathize. Cowardice is nothing to do with it - suicide takes considerable courage. Japanese have the right idea. No, what's selfish is to demand another to endure an intolerable existence, just to spare families, friends, and enemies a bit of soul-searching. The only selfishness lies in ruining strangers' days by forcing 'em to witness a grotesqueness."

    This quote stuck out to me because you do always hear about people saying that suicide is a cowardly act. When you think about that someone has to override their instinct to survive to actually commit suicide though, if you think about it, that does take quite a bit of courage.

    Yep. My uncle killed himself... Didn't get me the white iPhone... Seriously, shot himself. I didn't really care. Am I an emotionless monster?
