Why Mare-Do-Well Is The Worst Episode Of MLP:FiM

Okay, let's get this out of the way... This episode is THE SPAWN OF SATAN HIMSELF! Why? Because it takes Rainbow Dash's character, and destroys it. All of the usual flaws of a bad episode are present, but that's not the problem. The problem begins with the Mane Six.

Rainbow Dash is egotistical beyond belief, and the others are just... a&#holes. I mean, if you think about it, if your friend upstaged you and showed off just to teach you about humility, you wouldn't take that sitting down. In fact, you'd be even less likely to be humble afterwards.

In fact, this whole episode is just very mean-spirited. One minute, Ponyville is cheering for Dash, and the next minute, they shun her while saying Mare-Do-Well's praises.

This episode has the GUTS to have Scootaloo abandon Rainbow Dash for Mare-Do-Well. That's where I draw the line. This episode feels like a bad fanfiction, and this is where it is most obvious.

But it's not a fanfic. This is a real episode. With a real, paid writer.

Pictured above is Merriwether Williams, the writer responsible for this warping of Dash's character. She also worked on "Putting Your Hoof Down" and post-movie Spongebob, which isn't a good sign.

It's easy to see why this episode is hated so much. By taking the then-most popular character in the show and making a mockery of her, many bronies, pegasisters and little girls alike were left with a bad taste in their mouths. Some bronies even went as far as disowning Rainbow Dash as their favorite character because of this episode.

    You're right, it was one of the worst episodes. First, they were happy that she was a hero and then her friends ganged up on her. They were trying to teach her lesson about 'it's not all about you'. But why would they do that? Dashie was supposed to be like that. But, RD is still my favorite though. She's a pretty popular character anyways and I'll always love her. <3

    This is the problem with Rainbow Dash fans, every episode that shows her in any form of negative light gets way to much hate.

    The fact that i hate her doesn't mattor right now, but you know what does? The fact that grown people hate a good episode because their favorite character were showed in a negative light.

    Yeah, because an episode that goes against the show's very premise is a good episode, and I only hate it because I like Rainbow Dash. Surely I'm not the only one who hates it...

    The fact that you hate Dash DOES matter, because it's most likely the reason you say I only hate the episode because Rainbow Dash's character is destroyed.

    Not everyone thinks the same way you do. I can like Dash all I want, and you can't change that. You're just butthurt that I have a different opinion than you.

    And yes, there are bronies and pegasisters who aren't RD fans that hate this episode.

    TL;DR Me being an RD fan isn't the entire reason why I hate this episode.

    Yet you only bring up that rainbow dash looks bad in this episode in your blog post, I view that as proof that the only real reason you hate this episode is because of rainbow dash looking bad. Now, how does this go against the shows premise?

    I feel it's more of a critque on super hero fans.
    we all do it though. even me.
    Green Lanturn can save as many people as he wants. he still SUCKS!
    I'd root for almost any hero competing with him.

    Well RD9K is right.I'm not much of a RD fan myself,I do like RD even though I'm an AJ fan.in fact,the only thing i don't like about RD is how self centered she is at times. but even I hated this episode. it just really did take everything RD stood for and just smashed it. she was a competitive,loyal,and extremely boastful but was also a hero to people in ponyville.but then the Mysterious Mare-do-well shows up and ends up taking Rainbow Dash's spot light. and in an eager attempt to at least get a thank you she asks a pony if she could help open their Jar of food yet she STILL fails at that.the fastest pony in Equestria and she ends up losing her spotlight,and is somehow unable to opening a jar...A. MOTHER.****ING. JAR. now tell me if that isn't the slightest bit outrageous?

    That happens all the time in real life,why can't it happen in a cartoon?. Rainbow Dash had her 15 minutes of fame and then someone else had theirs.

    I really have to agree with yamet and Heimdall here. This episode is just fine. It's not great, but it's not anywhere near as bad as all the rainbow dash fans keep saying it is. (And yes, almost all the people who complain about this episode are very big, self-advertised fans of rainbow dash.)

    First of all, I disagree with your conclusion above. If my friends 'upstaged' me to teach me some humility, I absolutely would take it to heart and change my ways. Especially considering I respect my friends, and acting as Rainbow Dash did in this episode (even if it was a little out of character) is, without a question, a strain on their friendship. I mean...she ignored a pony falling to their doom in a hot air balloon to sign an autograph. That's not okay in any light you put it in. She clearly needed to be taught a lesson. The best argument that could be made against this episode is that her friends never actually talked to her about her behavior and jumped straight to the costumed shenanigans, but something tells me Rainbow Dash wouldn't have listened to mere words at that point.

    And I am talking from the way RD acts in this episode, not her character in other episodes. Yes, this episode did have her acting odd and out of character, but that doesn't mean it was bad writing. Rainbow Dash screwed up; just because she's loyal and all the stuff she normally is MOST of the time doesn't mean she is always that way. I mean, this episode is basically Rainbow Dash's version of how Pinkie Pie acted in Filli Vanilli; still sort of in character, but not quite. And I don't think that's a problem. It would be a pretty static show if the characters never acted any other way but their exact, perfectly defined personality.

    Second, about the whole 'ganging up' aspect. Her friends were not trying to beat her down into the ground and tell her she was not awesome. They were showing her that just because she was a hero did NOT mean she was above other ponies. And the townsponies didn't 'shun' her at all. They moved on to a different hero, sure, but the moment with Scootaloo was meant to convey that Rainbow Dash was still perfectly welcome in Ponyville, she just wasn't being treated as a hero anymore; she was a regular old pony again, and she couldn't take that, so she exiled HERSELF.

    And let's be fair here. I'd cheer for Mare-Do-Well over Rainbow Dash in this case too. It's nice to have someone around to save you, but when they act like an egotistical jerk on and off duty, I'll take the one who doesn't talk at all, thank you very much.



    Just so you are all aware, I have no particular dislike for Rainbow Dash. I think she is an overrated character, and a lot of people fanboy/fangirl over her for some reason that I don't understand, but I don't think she is bad.
