Princess Luna woke from her slumber. The night was still dark and bright stars dotted the sky while a full moon lit the land of Equestria. The soft breathing of her colt, Eclipse, snapped her out of her daze and she looked down at him, sleeping soundly by her side. His coat was a bright blue and he had a horn, making him a unicorn. Though he had alicorn blood running through his veins, she knew that he would have to earn his wings, but she wasn’t sure that he ever would. She admired his thick black mane and tail as the cool night breeze blew through it and a frown formed on her face. She feared that he would follow in the footsteps of his father, King Sombra.

Nobody knew about Eclipse, not even her sister, Princess Celestia. Luna knew that Celestia would never understand the relationship that Luna had shared with Sombra. He hadn’t always been an evil unicorn. He had once been a simple earth pony stallion with big dreams and he shared them all with Luna, his one true love, but Sombra had a darkness growing inside him. Luna tried to tell him that dark magic would never help him accomplish his dreams the way he wanted. She knew that he envied that fact that she was an alicorn and he wanted to be able to practice magic the same as her and Celestia, but that was impossible without at least a horn. So against Luna’s knowledge, Sombra found a dark magic spell and used it to turn himself into a unicorn and took over the Crystal Empire, becoming its king. From the moment Celestia found out about his use of dark magic, she had her mind made up that he needed to be banished and Luna had no choice, but to agree with her. With a heavy heart, Luna helped Celestia wield the elements of harmony and turned Sombra into nothing more than mere shadow. They banished him into the far reaches of the artic, but along with him, the Crystal Empire disappeared. A thousand years later, it returned. Celestia used the opportunity to put her star student Twilight Sparkle to the test and see how she would overcome her greatest obstacle yet, but Luna knew she had to see Sombra again. He was still in his shadow form, but he could become a fully formed stallion in the dark of night when no light could shine on him and it was then that their old feelings ignited.

Luna remembered how tenderly Sombra loved her, which resulted in her falling pregnant with Eclipse. How could a sweet, caring, loving stallion like Sombra become so evil? After that night, Sombra broke through Princess Cadence’s love spell and began attacking the Crystal Empire despite Luna’s pleas for him to stop. In the end, Sombra had been completely destroyed and Luna, being pregnant, knew that she had to go into hiding. Now here she was, a single mother to a colt who was the one true prince of the Crystal Empire, but how could she ever tell her sister and the citizens of the Crystal Empire that she had birthed King Sombra’s son? They would surely hate her and she didn’t even want to think about what Celestia would do to her. She did not want to spend another thousand years banished to the moon. She couldn’t, she had Eclipse to raise.
“What have I done?” Luna asked herself, nuzzling her son’s mane. “Nobody will ever understand.” She sighed and laid her head back down, drifting off to sleep.

Chapter One

:cry:Tears slid down her cheeks as she thought of what had happened to King Sombra. She had loved him so and still did, but he was gone. If only there were some way to bring him back. She thought as the sun began to creep into the sky. She knew that Celestia was at work raising the sun and that it was time for her to take Eclispe to their daytime hiding place deep underground. It was there she had hidden during her pregnancy, in the ruins of Sombra's castle and it was here she had been studying various dark magic in hopes of discovering a spell that would bring her beloved back, but so far, she had found nothing. In so many ways, she hated her sister and was still very jealous of her. Celestia seemed to have it all and nobody ever seemed to argue with her or disagree with her decisions, for if they did they would be forced to reform just as Discord had been or worse, they would be banished to the moon as she had been or to the far reaches of the artic as Sombra had been for at least a thousand years if not more.

"Is it morning yet, Mama?" Eclispe asked, snapping her out of her thoughts. She looked at the colt whose wide deep blue eyes were fixed on her and full of wonder. She smiled at him and nodded her response. "Will I get to meet Auntie Celestia today?"

Luna cringed at the dreaded question. She knew that she would have to introduce her son to Celestia, but she knew it was not going to go over well. Celestia had been searching for Luna non-stop since her disappearance and some feared that she had changed into Nightmare Moon once again. At times, Luna wished that she were still in her Nightmare Moon form, that those six meddlers hadn't interfered with her plans to take revenge on Celestia, but then she knew that hatred would never solve anything. She knew that she was just heart broken that her beloved was gone forever and it didn't appear that there was any spell that could bring him back to her.

"Mama?"

Luna looked at her son and said,

"I think you are ready to meet her, but you must understand that she will not like you."

"Why won't she like me?"

"It is not your fault dear one, but my sister is the ruler of all Equestria, she and your father never got along and I fear she will hate you because of who your father is...was..." Luna sighed deeply as another tear slid down her cheek.

"I don't understand, Mama." Eclipse said and nuzzled her. She put her hoof around him and hugged him close to her.

"It is okay, she will just have to learn to accept you, she cannot blame you for crimes you did not commit, my son." She stood up slowly. "Come on along then, let us go and see your Aunt Celestia."

With that, Eclipse followed his mother up through the secret passages of the Crystal Castle and it was then that he hoped onto her back so that she could carry him to Canterlot.
