The Sonic the Hedgehog Series Thread

This is a major knowledge territory for me too, similar to Metroid. Sonic was one of the few things that sparked a lot of the furries we now know commonly today and made gaming for 90's kids enjoyable. As for what sparked sparked the furries, that'll have to wait for a moment since I have a lot to cover here.

Starting with the classic Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis and Master System. The story behind the first game is that you are Sonic the Hedgehog and you must stop Dr. Robotnick, a mad scientist bent on taking over the world. It so happens that Robotnick also took powerful gems known as the Chaos Emeralds and you must recover them and defeat him.

This game was a major push for sonic and it spawned quite a few hand held games. Though the success and popularity of the game also spawned The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog and SatAM, among other animations such as the first animation movie.

SatAM was the cartoon animation that overshadowed The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog because... well go see for yourself on the Nostalgia Critic's video. Not to say Adventures was all bad. It was definitely entertaining for kids but SatAM was more for serious Sonic fans more or less. It was a lot more of what we were looking for in a cartoon. This of course also spawn a lot of closet furries. This show wasn't the soul cause but it was one of them.

Though with it's popularity, it was due with a sequal. This is where the second game sent to the Sega Genesis steps in. Sonic 2. This game was full of firsts. Unlike the first game, you can now collect 7 chaos emeralds and the mythical Super Sonic started with this game. With this new special power at Sonic's disposal, you could defeat Robotnick and free all the animals once more.

Two years later the third installment in the series was born and got both good and bad critical acclaim. For those like myself, I enjoy the third the most. I felt like the Super Metroid of the Sega Genesis. Shortly after the third game they made a connector cartridge called Sonic and Knuckles which can connect with Sonic 1, 2, and 3. Sonic 2 gives you Sonic 2 staring Knuckles (making it Knuckle's technical first game despite Sonic 3 being his chronological debut) and Sonic 1 gives you Blue Sphere which is a more basic version of Sonic 3's emerald special stages.

From this point onward there have been games here and there that were not so popular and sonic was in his cool off period in some way. Though stuff like Sonic CD and Tail's Adventure did sate our lust for 2D Sonic platforming.

Around 2001 started the new age of sonic with Sonic Adventure. A re-release of it ended up on Nintendo Gamecube shortly after the failing Dreamcast system. Amy Rose returns form Sonic CD with a new look... and is more obsessive than before. The remake kept Sonic in the heart of fans and the story of his adventures against Robotnick officially continued. Though the name change from Robotnick to Eggman started here. Along with many new features such as the chao gardens which stayed for a long while after this game.

Sonic Adventure 2 soon came after it along with it Gamecube remake. This was the birth of Shadow the Hedgehog which has become a hot phenomenon character for many, along with a new character named Rouge the Bat. She has also held a strong grasp on the fan community for some time...

I mean look at her! You can see why fans like her... nuff said...

From this point onward many new games have been created such as Sonic Heroes, Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic The Hedgehog 2006 (*shutters*), etc.

But that brings me to why I bring up a thread about it now. Sega has finally got their heads out of their butts and is making a game called Sonic Mania. I know the title is goofy but take a look at what's been going on!

Sega is going back to the classics at long last! We will get to see a lot of old things return and new innovations that will make the 2D platforming experience much better. I'll let the posts and videos do the talking but you gotta see this to believe it!

Anyway, discuss away about Sonic during the new and old ages. Maybe you wanna talk more about a Sonic game you liked or disliked? Talk about it here!

I used to be a HUGE Sonic fan. First game I played was Sonic R in 2002. After that, I was hooked. However, I stopped being a fan in 2012 because I wasn't too big a fan of the fandom. That, and I generally lost interest in the series. However, I still play some of the games on occasion, and I'm actually considering checking out Sonic Mania.

Sonic was one of my first fandoms. It was also one of the few that I've ever left.
While the older games still hold up, the SatAM series does not, and the new incarnations are about as enjoyable as a shrimp fork to the eyeball.

Well, it's not so much giving up as much as the awareness of the NX system coming out next year. No one wants to put anything on the Wii U because it could be a potential NX title.

I actually have to agree with you here Ridley. I choose renounce my fandom towards it too. A lot of stuff after Sonic Adventure 2 for me was very... mediocre at best. Not to mention the travesty that was Sonic 06, which is now being overshadowed by the worse off Sonic Boom stuff. The fan base... uhg! Forget about it. The Sonic Fan Base Community makes any other fandom look sane...

Moving on, I personally can still enjoy SatAM but I would be deluded to think it aged well. It most certainly has not, but where age hurts it, quality still stands. SatAM and the animation movie with Hyper Metal Sonic were of the few things from my fond memories back when Sonic was actually SONIC.

Yeah I'm a fan. One of the few platformers I like. I continue to play it because I have nothing else to play. The Sonic Boom games may not be the best, but it's good enough.

I was glad to see that a new game is coming out though. Looking forward to it.
