I'm Confused on this subject... Rainbow Factory...

My only real dislike of the fanfict is that the backround is a bit lacking. I understand that they ran out and children where the only alternativ-... Or is it? Their factory director is the only pony in history to ever produce a rainbow naturally and not by some unholy act of Celestia... I think they have their priorities a little muffed.

I think they need to take Dash and use her prismadic powers to power the machine, in a way that doesn't require her to die or the sacrafice of children.

(And if RF is not allowed in forums I am sorry.)

Rainbow Factory? Never heard of it. Could you give a link so I can see what you mean?

I don't think it's meant to be accurate. And I'm sure it's more efficient to do it this way than rely on one pony.

^ That's the song it's based off of. I'm not sure it's wise posting a link to the story because it's quite the grimdark fic. Not as bad as some...but still pretty dark.

I haven't read it, but based on the song and the parody, I pretty much know what it's about. It's supposedly a good horror story--the second after Slendermane, I believe. Slendermane was the big horror story when I joined the fandom (before writing).

Err...I think there's something very important to realise about Rainbow Factory that you might have missed: it's main focus is not the Rainbow Factory itself.

The Factory is a backdrop mainly. It's just where this story happens to be rather than the central point of the story. I agree: I'd like to see more about the Factory itself and how it's internal politics and various places work but that's for others to fill in. The thrust of the narrative is the relationship between Scootaloo and Rainbow Dash and how that relationship spells the end for any shred of mercy in Rainbow's soul.

Because that is the focus, we never get to meet any other scientists, or workers or guards or anything because the focus is on the two central mares. I agree, it's a little bit of an oversight on Aurora' part to not show evidence of trying alternative solutions, or even what part Rainbows had in Equestria's weather system but it's not what the writer set out to do, so hasn't. Aurora Dawn wanted this to be a character driven tragedy.

But from within the logic of the world? A Sonic Rainboom is supposedly extremely difficult to achieve and only Rainbow Dash has been shown to achieve one. It seems difficult to maintain a quota with only one pegasis. Also, the other advantage for the pegasis community is getting rid of those that can't fly and maintaining a ghastly mask of superiority and perfection. Why would they give that up when they clearly don't give much of a thought about where those that fail the exam go.

    Does this make any sense?

I believe in the story they first tried to use Dash to produce the rainbows, it failed obviously. That's why they so ponies. I have no proof to back up my facts though. I'm way to lazy to hunt down the part in the fic that says it.

Sub-6k words. It's not particularly long. I find it amusing that some of the more influential stories right now are some of the shortest. Rainbow Factory and My Little Dashie got quite a bit of cross-art tributes, but Slendermane received very little. Past Sins and FO:E definitely, but other long ones like OM&M didn't despite its emotional impact. I must read these...

Everytime you bring up OM&M my heart is hit with a hammer. I swear the ending was like.......i don't even have words.....hardhitting is good enough. Everyone should read that fic.

I love rainbow factory because I love the relationship between Scoot and Dash.

    Read it, never again. EVER

But they could not find a way to extract the spectrum or whatever from Rainbow Dash's rainbows, so they put her in charge of the project as she was the closest thing to pure spectrum. So, that explains it? And it had to come from living ponies, because non-living objects did not work in the machine for some reason.

    (Just my understanding)

oh come off it, it wasn't THAT bad. I mean, sure, it was a tad bloody, and it was touching, but I would hardly call it "never again" territory. Plus, it was pretty well-written and altogether was a nice piece of writing.

Altogether, though, I thought the impracticality of it was the point- that petty politics and the lack of value that is placed on individual people not only can lead to monstrous results, but entirely pointless ones. I mean, rainbows are entirely aesthetic anyways, and it isn't like a lack of efficiency in production would DO anything. Or maybe I'm reading too deeply into it.

No, no. That makes a lot of sense to me. It has a central focus on how this place has been built on the pursuit of something not worth chasing or sacrificing for. That's the overall tragedy: the work is cruel and pointless, as far as we can tell. Seems awfully reminiscent of child labour, perhaps. You might argue that lives are also being fed into a machine for something aesthetic and unnecessary as cheep trainers. I'd love to make more of the world it sets up though at some point...

I would recommend a read. Out of the handful of Pony Fan Fics to reach notoriety, being worth your time is high praise, I should think.

*Currently listenin' to a dramatic reading of it
On the rainboom issue, not only is it hard to preform-Celestia asked RainbowDash IF she could preform one for the wedding-it's not a true rainbow. It doesn't linger in the sky nor happens right after a rain-it's more of an explosion of colour. It would be vastly different then a Celestia produced rainbow.
Currently i'm on part 2 of 5 (already read the summary) and I'm enjoyin' it. CX
