Spoiler: My reaction to Cupcakes Of course, before I became a brony, someone did a live reading of Cupcakes on Teamspeak and for some twisted reason I found it hilarious. Probably because I had no idea who the characters were, or what the show was even called.
i just read a small but of the beggining and i can only say one thing : WTF!!!!!! what sick mind would do this, brb getting some bleach for my brain
Can only agree. I read it, and man, i was not disgusted. It is not even entertaining. I can only recommend people to skip it, it is s**t. The worst fic ever. Well, at least better than shipping. But damn, it's too overrated.
Well I guess it's like a lot of pop stars, the media and public seem to hate them but it doesn't make them any less "popular" - Look at RB's Friday youtube views ^^ But I'm still debating whether to read this or not.
As you can tell from my signature, I have read both Cupcakes and Rocket To Insanity. I'm odd in that I try to almost visualize, or play out, what happens in a story in my mind. So during reading it, and visualizing the goings on, I had a few minor cringes. Upon finishing the story, I overall wasn't that impressed with it and don't get why it's so infamous. I only read it because I kept hearing from others on EPR about how disturbing it was, so I figured I'd seek it out (I'm a bit of a gorehound). I agree with the others who have said that it's ridiculous that a fanfic would alter one's perceptions about a character. I wish I could recall where I saw or heard a quote that I feel fits with this fanfic leaking into others' perceptions of the actual character. It went something along the lines of, "I see a lot of people who are fans of a particular novel or video game get upset over a movie that gets made of the same thing. I can't relate to that. What they fail to realize, is that each is a story of its own. So the novel or game is one telling, and the director of the movie is just providing their own version of the story. So I look at each as a different and unique story." I personally feel this applies here as well. Cupcakes is merely one person's telling of a story, whereas the show is a separate story. They may use similar characters, but both are their own individual story, and shouldn't be compared all that closely. I was unaware either that the author originally intended the story to be a macabre joke for all the fans of shipping fanfics. After reading that in this thread, I chuckled a bit. Without knowing that while reading the story, I feel detracts from it. I just had the impression that the author was trying way too hard to write a gore fic. I also have another quote for this situation. This is from the author of the controversial novel Battle Royale, Koushun Takami. Takami states, "The personal background of an author is essentially irrelevant, and any story—or for that matter, a work in any creative form—that needs foreknowledge of its creator to be enjoyed is fundamentally poor." I think this is one of those cases where the story is really enjoyable if you're aware it's written as a joke. Otherwise it just seems forced and poorly written. Or maybe that's just me. I didn't think Rocket To Insanity was that much better, but I overall enjoyed it more. Could just be that I like things that mess with someone's mind. I also enjoyed reading how the author (different one from Cupcakes, but they wrote the fanfic as a follow up) depicted Rainbow Dash's descent into insanity.
I haven't read any of the sequels, and don't plan to. Cupcakes is the original gore fic, anything else lacks the shock factor. If anything, they're just trying to compete with Cupcakes, trying to achieve that notoriety it obtained. I'm not saying that all gore fic writers are leaching off of Sgt. Sprinkles' success, I'm merely stating that most gore fics are probably trying to emulate Cupcakes. Of course I wouldn't even want to criticize the writer for not creating a Pinkie parallel to the canon character, I wouldn't criticize him for anything. It was his story, he could have made Pinkie a one eyed lesbian french chef if he really wanted. I have no issues with him. It's the response from other people that gets me. Canon is canon. Fanon is fanon. Yet, there are some that genuinely drag the Cupcakes Pinkie onto the actual show. Analysing her character referencing the story, I mean seriously? The only thing about Cupcakes that I truly don't like, is it's effect upon the fandom. I mean, it was pretty naff, but that doesn't bother me. We can't all he the living incarnation of Shakespeare.
Guys, I agree that it was messed up. I was sick to my stomach when I read it. Now, I'm about to render a reading of it onto my YouTube. Grimdark is my thing simply BECAUSE of the shock value. Like it or not, your choice.
Sweeney Todd actually had a story, and musical numbers And made you sympathize and understand the lead character, macabre as he may be. Cupcakes is just Pinkie Pie killing Rainbow Dash for a few pages of guilty pleasure to people who enjoy gore.
Anyways, to add up a bit backstory to my reading, I did imagine the gore while reading Cupcakes. If you never saw the removing of organs from an animal, i am sure this can be a bit disturbing. Believe me, this is mild. The overall idea of using someone's body parts (or organs, whatever) as an ingredient isn't that overused, but definitely would've been kinda more interesting if the writer used interesting names for them, like "Eyecake" or something like that. Just a small add-on, nothing special really.
Just keep on track and relatively "clean". I must say it's one of my more nose turning views on bronies and the mlp fanbase. Why someone feels the need to turn something so colourful and wonderful into a dark, grim, gore drenched fan fic I'll never know. But to everypony his business I guess! :/
I guess everything always has to have something grimdark that everybody knows about. In this case, it's Cupcakes.
Damned right! It - it's exploitative, that's what it is! And a bit of the old ultra-violent too. Would YOU drive a stake through your friend's foot for business?
mmmmmmmmm, I dont like the Dark,Gore, Blood fics, NONE!!, but for some reason................. I had to read it..........maybe for curious, by the way..... Of course I hate it, not saying is bad writed, is an incredible fic of horror, gore, but I dont like that stuff
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! OH MY GOD IT'S KILLING ME!!! I THINK MY EYEBALLS ARE COMING OUT OF MY HEAD. HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's on my 'To Read' list. It's the only other fic I hear about as much as Past Sins. They're the only two super popular and discussed ones.
I read it, the atmosphere was just right and I pretty much laughed through it so I didnt see the gravity of what I was reading
