Well, I finally crossed the divide. I read my first fanfic a few days ago. I'm a biologist and hardly ever touch fiction. We're not exactly on speaking terms. That said, I really enjoyed the piece I read. The story I read was called Lyra's Human. It was pretty enjoyable and short enough to finish in one sitting while in bed. It worried me that it was going to turn into some weird sexual thing at a few parts, but thankfully it avoided that. Now, my curiosity is piqued. What are some other good stories out there? I need to be able to get them in PDF form so I can read them on my phone (for killing time in the lab, or reading while in bed). I would also prefer ones about the background characters (especially Lyra, Octavia, or Derpy). Does anyone have any recommendations of ones to read, or sites to check out for PDF formatted stories? I have no idea where to begin.
Read My Little Dashie. It also has three sequels. I'm not kidding, it doesn't matter how old you are, you'll cry while reading it.
well, I'd recommend Running From Myself. It's story about Twilight's past as foal at magic kindergarten, and how it effects her in presents.
If you're okay with shipping (just romance--I won't recommend clop here), "Allegrezza" is a famous Vinyl/Octavia story. I'm only 1/3rd of the way through it, but it's full of romantic comedy. A somewhat distant spinoff of that story is "Three's Company" but it's not a direct sequel and written before Allegrezza was finished. I can't really recommend more than that since I've never read anything in regards to many background characters. Poke around FiMfiction.net--I believe you can download things in PDF format now.
I'd read parliment of dreams. That's one I like. As for Octavia fics, I have none, which is strange since she is best pony. Your best bet would be to go to EqD and look at all the fic they have posted there.

I really liked Of Mares and Magic. Twilight x Trixie shipping story. It's kinda long, but very touching. If we're encompassing pairings beyond background characters: TwiLuna: Common Sky (and Fragments?) Spark (and To Be An Alicorn) Twixie: The Ballad of Twilight Sparkle (an absolute must-read romantic comedy, even if you don't like shipping) (G.Docs only) Of Mares & Magic TwiLestia: Composure Interference (comedy and suggestive, but SFW) Eternal (haven't finished reading) Other: Past Sins Fallout: Equestria (some of the side stories are supposed to be good--never read any of it) If something is top rated, it's generally earned its place. However, Past Sins earns a lot of ridiculous flak for bearing story elements a lot of people feel weaken it as a whole. I disagree with pretty much all of it and it's a great non-shipping story with a well thought out storyline, characters, and approach. If you're more interested in authors: Pen Stroke, AVeryStrange, SyrinKitty, and Gravekeeper would be good to look at.

Ha, you got to it before I did. Ya, don't ever read cupcakes. Not only is the story extremely grotesque, but the writing itself is just horrible. Really not worth reading.
