Now many of you may have heard of the fan-made non-profitable game in production since Season 1 called "My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic". Several brony artists and musicians have contributed to it, but yesterday it was ordered a cease and desist from Hasbro. The game, which is essentially an MLP themed fighter, has been one of the most anticipated brony projects ever. Production was almost shut down when the beta was accidentally released, because it was that spectacular for a fan project. Lauren Faust herself has offered the development team, ManeSix, new, original characters created by the Fausticorn herself to support the game. She is a saint. Hasbro backstabbed her the most when they took her creation and did everything she didn't intend to it, especially alicorn Twilight, which she despised the idea of. So yeah. There's a petition that requires a hundred thousand signatures, I doubt it will ever succeed though...
Such a shame. I've been following Fighting is Magic since before I even joined EP. I really hope something works out.
...incredible... rage. Do they have no appreciation for how much work was going into that game? It was professional quality. And in what way did it threaten Hasbro's money-making machine? Don't tell me they intended to make a My Little Street Fighter for Nintendo DS. But when I saw Lauren Faust's tweet, I felt all warm and happy. She really is something else.
Very conflicted feelings :s at least Lauren seems to be trying to help em a bit after this. I doubt the petition will work since when are net petitions taken seriously especially when video games are involved *edit* I think this is the petition poetic was talking about RobinHood allow the continuation of MLP fighting is magic
I let this Dalek sum up my feelings. EXTERMINATE, EXTERMINATE. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7r9olmTvmHI Hasbro just went over the line. This was not even for profit, they should not have this right. It should be fair use, EXTERMINATE. Edit. Kudos to Lauren Faust.
I'm kind of annoyed that Hasbro have stopped this project. Not because now I'll never be able to play the game, but because a lot of effort was put into the making of this and all of it has been lost. All that time and effort has now been (more or less) wasted. It's non-profit, so why should Hasbro care? Why not just take down every pony website and half of DeviantArt? But Hasbro are an incredibly powerful company, so pretty much nothing can be done. And how long do you reckon it will take for PonyKart to be taken down? (although they seem to be slowing down development a lot recently)
Hasbro has been cracking down on copyright issues a lot recently, only a couple weeks ago they copyright banned almost all of the Friendship is Witchcraft video series on youtube. Everyone who is outraged by this, sign the petition. It may not do much good in the end, but it starts with the little guy. The least we can do is make our displeasure known. I saw a petition on that US government petition site about changing the U.S. national anthem to the MLP:FiM intro, and it got 100,000 signatures. Obviously the anthem won't be changed,, but bronies are a very large group, we can do 100k signatures easy. If possible I would also suggest emailing Hasbro's PR/HR dept. directly. The squeaky wheel gets the grease, lets atleast let them know we do not approve.
I am angry now. Hasbro, what are you thinking? You've been going in all the wrong directions here. Shutting down parts of the fandom is not the way to make them like you, and that's what you've been doing ever since Season 3 started.
The peition site isn't working for me, dunno why. I also looked at Hasbro's site, seems you have to have an account in order to email them, and it's only for customer service regarding their toys. Honestly the most effective strategy would be to reach out to the brony community and have everyone boycott the official toys, and instead only buy customs. Money is about the only thing corporations understand. However, bronies probably do not make up that much of a significant portion of their customer base for the official toys anyway, as a lot of us choose customs over official anyway. So I doubt it would work.
This game looked amazing. The animation, the music... top notch all around. Was it IP infringement? Of course. But it would have cost Hasbro nothing to leave it alone.
I made a meme about it on My Little Brony, (part of chzburger/membase) more of an announcement than a funny, and included a link to the petition site in an effort to spread the news. You can find it here: http://cheezburger.com/7050321152 I think it has to be upvoted to actually appear on the site so people can see it, though.
Just signed the petition. I was looking forward to this project, not just because it was a game. Because it was a great piece of fanart, one the greatest ever. Let`s all hope that Hasbro will understand this in the near future. Also, Fausticorn is awesome. Have a nice evening/day, (if you can) Greetings
I'm a combination of both mad and upset. Fighting Is Magic was shaping up to be just an amazing fighter, it could have even made it to EVO. But no. There was something amazing about this game, but alas Corporate has even gotten a hold of Hasbro. Looks like its back to boring Marvel and Anime Fighters that no one else plays. There's only one thing to do. Join Angry Joe and his fight against the evil forces of Corporate.
What a shame...been following development of this game the day I came across it...But I suppose it was inevitable. Ms. Faust is such a dear though. Kudos to her for offering custom characters.
I went and signed the petition! Its not very often I feel moved enough to actually sign something like this regarding media. (I sign political petitions all the time) Hell, I'm not even angry, I'm just more or less baffled. I've always been a big fan of protecting creative and intellectual property, but this decision confuses me. It was Non-Profit, so it wouldn't have been digging into Hasbro's pockets in any way, and if anything it would've been free advertisement for FiM and expanded their pretty massive fan base even further. I don't have a problem with anyone protecting creative property, but I feel like Hasbro made this decision just for the sake of doing it. Also.. for the OP. The Twilicorn thing... Yeah, maybe Lauren Faust didn't plan that, but presenting as "Backstabbing" may give a false impression of her reaction. If memory serves she wasn't planning to do that, but wasn't going to undermine the writers by going against them. I don't think we really know what she thinks about it, and if she does have a problem with it, It'll probably be said behind closed doors to people who make the decisions. Because airing dirty laundry publicly isn't really professional.
To clear up, Hasbro lawyers' thought the money the game devs were sending to charity in donations counted as being a profitable organisation. Lauren isn't going behind the writers, she's upset with the big bosses, Hasbro, who keep imposing decisions onto the writers. And she has expressed her feelings that Hasbro have manipulated her idea, backstabbing her in the process in public before. Now that she doesn't work on the show, she can't do anything about it at all.
Ah. I'm not saying your wrong or anything, but a google search doesn't seem to be yielding anything on Faust being angry with Hasbro. Do you have a link to something so I can see for myself? xD
