I'd like them more if they didn't scream. I've personally always hated the sound of screaming in metal. Their music is good though, and I like their vocals when they're not screaming.

I've listened to Still Life, it was a good album, and nice song choices.

I don't mean to sound like an elitist when I say this, but Opeth don't use screams in their songs, they growl in them.

METAL THREAD DETECTED. PREPARING TO ENGAGE.

Yeah, I don't know if I really deserve to be here. XD

Opeth was a band I almost got into but got distracted by too many other bands I picked up around the same time. I like what I've heard from them, but I haven't heard enough to say I'm a fan. I've listened only to Heritage and bits and pieces of their other material, mostly from Blackwater Park. I'm a bad metalhead. :(

I started going through Watershed at work recently, with no real results to speak of. Music sounds a lot better when you don't have to divide your attention. lol

Also Yami, go listen to Heritage. Don't think, just do it.

    GOD IS DEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD

    And where's Xaniith

    I am summoned.

I haven't actually had a good listen to them in ages.
I used to, having Deliverance and Ghost Reveries as my fave albums.
From those, my band and I tried to cover The Grand Conjuration and Master's Apprentice. Never completed it fully.
    I drummed and vocaled.

Agreed. Heritage is an album that needs to grow on you.

Regardelss of your initial response; After listening to it a couple of times you'll either love it or don't.

    Oooo, you're in a band?

It's an acquired taste, growling and screaming. I personally like it because it adds more emotion to the song, though my first response to growling and screaming was the same as yours. It took me a while before I could grow onto it. The first bands with growling in them that I had gotten into were Isis and Opeth, and I still do consider those bands as some of my favorites.

And then there are also certain types of vocals that people would have to get used to especially. ie, a very unique sort of screaming/growling, as apposed to quite similar vocals coming from many bands. Buruzm and Ihsahn/Emperor are some examples of quite unique vocals.

Yeah there are quite a few examples of unique vocals that take quite the adjustment to get into. I remember the first time I listened to Burzum, I wasn't a fan of the vocals.

That's all well and good, but I'm not interested in the brutality or emotion that comes from growling/screaming. I listen to music for the musicality of the composition, and to me, growling/screaming is irritating noise that interferes with my enjoyment of the music itself.

^Yeah, I understand. Just like I'll never really enjoy rap or techno. It just does nothing for me, it's no matter of getting used to it.

Not saying they're a bad band. ^^ They're awesome! Just not too much to my tastes. It's a shame. :derpe:

I listened to Heritage. It was alright, but nothing really stuck out to me. Could just be because I was using it as BGM for what I was doing at the time.
