Dirt simple this; what are the most memorable scares you've had in gaming? For example, 7-year old me + Resident Evil 1 (original PS1 release) + that dog corridor = More recently: All of Amnesia: The Dark Descent Battlefield 3; some mucked up glitch when I was lying prone and someone knifed me from behind. However, the glitch swapped his head with the knife. So I had a guy with a knife for a head apparently jump me from behind and beat me to death with a decapitated head that had no eyes. The Last Of Us; the first time I got jumped by a Clicker. Didn't help that my TV's sound messed up and Joel's scream was 10 times louder than normal. And it was late at night. And the lightbulb in my den had died mid-game.
Doom 1, Episode 2 Level 6. You want the red key? Go into the dark area with blinking lights and tons of monsters. The ambient music doesn't help either. And the first time you enter Hyrule Field in Ocarina of Time. It's all fun and games until you go near the peahat.

Probably when I thought I lost a saved game, that is a far greater scare then any game itself could produce.
Power outage. Playing Ocarina of Time on my 3DS with the 3D on. The wallmasters (I think that's what the dropping hands are called). I'm pretty sure I will never recover.
