Could a 2nd video game industry crash happen? One reason the Crash of '83 happened was because consumers were tired of getting screwed over, as they were with Pac-Man and E.T. on the Atari 2600. Today, gamers deal with DLC, DRM, microtransactions, and having to pay full price for a half-finished, glitch-filled, broken game. Eventually, they're going to get tired of this, and protest with their wallets. Could this cause another industry crash, and if so, who could revive it like Nintendo did with the NES?
Not a chance. Modern gamers are used to the crap that industry shovels their way, and they're far too busy eating it to notice that it actually IS crap. If games like Dead Rising can become major hits, then quality is clearly no longer a factor.
Ugh, I played Dead Rising 2 for five minutes before turning my back on it forever. Terrible, terrible game. They expect you to stop and read text WHILE being attack by zombies
The text was the worst part of the game. How difficult would it have been to do a few voiceovers? The entire game played like something that was meant for the original Xbox, not the 360.
The game industry is makes millions of dollars. It's not in danger of crashing anytime soon. Besides, the reason for the crash is more than just because people were tired of bad games. It crashed because major companies like Atari made bad games in bulk. Like, more copies of ET than there were Atari consoles on the market. There were also other factors that wouldn't apply to today.
It’s Rant time.... After the Crash happened, America never recovered in making a new console in a now Japanese dominated market between 1983 to within the last decade. Once Nintendo released the NES, it was over. By the time America recovered, they did so in the Xbox. 19 years later..... Now, I have been playing Video Games since I was 2 years old, at least 80% of my life. The industry used to be simple during the late 90's and early 00's in that you get the game with basically everything in it, and purchasing an expansion pack for roughly $30 if the game is really that good. Between 2008-Now, the Industry had just [Redacted] up. Unlike the treasures of the 90’s (I actually prefer 90’s games then some of the games nowadays), Games understood that quality was well over quantity. Because of that, we got absolute masterpieces around the clock. Donkey Kong Country, Ocarina of Tine, Spyro the Dragon, Chrono Trigger, I could go on for hours. Now, it seems that the majority of the industry are greedy (Going to name several companies famous for this) who care nothing for the player and only focus on making a quick buck. EA is the best example; just look how they butchered Mass Effect 3 with its expensive DLC’s (Although, it is still an excellent game) It’s not just them, it’s also many other games as well. Call of Duty (A once good franchise, and a franchise that I will not miss when it dies sooner or later) just sells the same game with a different paintjob, and still expects you to pay $110 on release day and another $60 for expansions. Then we have Capcom with Dead Rising, as Ridley made a good point about its text, made an awful game that still sold by the dozen. It seems that those who call themselves “Gamers” just purchase a game regardless of how bad it is (Looking at you recent Resident Evil and Call of Duty’s). Not everybody is like this, but it’s only just a minority. We have our heads shoved so far up our you-know-what, we fail to realize that a crap game actually is a crap game. Will a Crash happen again, no. Gaming is a multi billion dollar industry and will likely not happen again. It doesn’t matter if you like games such as Mass Effect 3 or Battlefield IV is your call (Although both are good games, I don’t particularly see eye to eye with its current management and reputation of forcing you to throw money at them), but they in no way shape or form are they fundamentally terrible games like the games being released on Atari in the 80s. It could be much worse... On another note, the EA Customer Support won a ‘Worst Company Support’ award of some sort in Australia just recently. Why you ask? Ok, get ready for this... . To receive support from them for a single minute costs $2.50 TWO DOLLARS AND FIFTY CENTS A MINUTE!!! Not only how...but...WHY?
Oh you mean "The Elder Scrolls V: Glitchfest"? Aside from the glitches, how about the monotone lame voice acting? Or maybe the lack of a good ending to ANY of the storylines?
Lame voice acting? You clearly never spent any time with Serana. As far as endings go, the entire point of the game is adventuring! It would be ridiculous if every threat suddenly disappeared just because you killed a boss. Also, I'm trying to find this lameness you speak of. The main quest ends with the Dovahkiin traveling to Sovengarde to fight the World Eater beside the greatest heroes in Nord history. Dawnguard has him (or her) facing off against a powerful Vampire Lord with the fate of all of Tamriel hanging in the balance, and Dragonborn pits the Dovahkiin against a rogue Dragon Priest who wants to destroy all of reality.
I'm talking about what happens AFTER the bossfights. Do you get some cutscenes? Some closure? An epilogue? Nope. Nothing at all. You beat the final boss and that's it. It just ends. I've looted treasure chests in dungeons that offered me more of a reward than any of the questline endings. That's exactly what happens every time... As for the voice acting, I challenge you to play the game again, and see if you can detect any kind of emotion in the dialogue. I can't sense any fear, sadness, anger, joy, etc. in their voices. Whoever they hired to do the voices weren't invested at all in what they were paid to do. That or the writers just did a crap job and the voice actors had to deal with it. I'm not saying Skyrim is a bad game by any means. Not at all. I love it. I'm just tired of people babbling about how it's a perfect 10/10 game with no flaws, while they're blatantly overlooking even the most obvious flaws.
Games may ship buggy and unfinished, but despite the fact, they seem to be flying off the shelves and scoring positive reviews ie. Bathesda's growing collection games. The game industry is not going to crash, not with now being the trend that this age is the 2[sup]nd[/sup] great and bountiful indie game empire. I mean seriously, just look at how well indie games doing and the scale that it's happening on; indie games are even superseding some time-tested brand favourites with games like minecraft as the precursors to the age and the plethora of indie goodness that is steam green light.
I doubt we'd ever see another video game crash; as big as arcade games were back when the first crash occurred, the industry in general was far less lucrative than it is now. Now that game consoles of all types can be found in middle-class households all over the world - not to mention numerous online options for gamers - video games have become almost as firmly integrated into modern culture as film has. Sure, the game industry (AND the film industry, since I just mentioned it) puts out complete crap on a regular basis. But as long as people keep buying into hype and pouring their money into games that had relatively little effort put into them, more poor-quality games will continue to be made. And as sad as this is, it IS a sound business strategy, and one that keeps the market afloat. All we can do, as gamers who want to feel respected by the very games we buy, is support the companies that crank out triple A titles and shun the ones that produce crap. ...Also wouldn't hurt to support indie game makers, as there's quite often a lot of effort and imagination that goes into their games, as well.
And exactly what emotion is that then? :I There's a difference between showing emotions and acting emotional.
All this bashing on Dead Rising... If anything is going to crash the market, it's Activision and EA with their crappy oversold rehash games.
Fine, you want emotion? How about Ulfric and Galmar?[YOUTUBE]eJF-7g_z_so[/YOUTUBE] I've heard a lot about the lack of emotion in Skyrim, but I honestly don't see it. If you pay attention to the lore of the games, the Nords are meant to be strong, warrior types. Not exactly the type of people prone to emotional displays. If anything, the grim way that so many of them speak makes the game feel MORE realistic.
The emotion is there, but it's subtle. I'd rather that than the Shatner-esque voice acting you find in some of the games out there. (I'm lookin' at you, MGS series.)
Skyrim wasn't a bad game. It's a very good game. I don't know where everybody is getting these emotional displays from. It's a very well made game, considering it's sheer size. What i cant stand is the recent COD's. I still play Modern Warfare 2 online because I'm very good at it. Everything after that COD is crap. It's why i directed my little rant at the franchise.
