What is it with games journalism and the double standards it holds against Nintendo? If anything remotely negative happens to Nintendo, journalists claim that they're doomed and will go third party. When something bad happens to Sony or Microsoft, nobody says anything. Actually, what is it with the gaming community being anti-Nintendo? People claim that Nintendo "abandoned" them with the Wii, which is essentially whining about a company not catering to you. They whine about how they casualized the industry, when the reality is that "hardcore" gamers do NOT in any way make up the majority of the gaming community. Also, people whine that Nintendo should revive old franchises when they DID with Punch-Out and Kid Icarus.
Where is all this whining? I frequently read articles about the gaming industry, and I've seen nothing but praise for Nintendo.
Critics only ever called out Nintendo for it's repetitiveness, which is something that never happened to Sony or Microsoft (yet). They only criticize the fact that Nintendo keeps doing remakes and HD releases of old games, keeps focussing on old franchises, and hardly ever makes anything new. They criticized the Wii because it actually is a crappy console compared to the PS3 and Xbox360 it competed with. Double standards have nothing to do with it, because Nintendo actually is a cheap company when you think about it.
Nintendo has made new IPs. 3DS: Pushmo Dillon's Rolling Western Wii: Xenoblade Gamecube: Pikmin Chibi-Robo Baten Kaitos Wait, Nintendo gets criticized for making HD remakes? What about all the HD remakes for the PS3?
You mean those 2-3 HD collections they made last year and maybe the year before? Nintendo is usually remaking one of their old games and passing it off as new almost every year. Most of them are just recycled with maybe a few new gimmicks and graphics, but largely stale gameplay.
Don't get me wrong, I like Nintendo, but just not their habit of clinging on retro games to make them money. They can make some good handheld devices and a few of their IPs like Star Fox, Kid Icarus, Animal Crossing, Metroid, and Super Smash are some of my favorite. But they're just having trouble with breaking much new ground with games and consoles.
Those who don't like Nintendo have their own personal reasons for it, just like you have yours for not hating them. Just accept their opinions as they accept yours.
While Nintendo has great products, their constant rehashing of Mario games and calling them 'New' got old in 2010. It's still going now. Then again, it's selling well. So why should they change it if the sales are good? In short, we can moan and whine about Nintendo all we want. They'll still make a profit in the end.
It got old in 2000. :v Aside from Mario, there are the constant remakes of Ocarina of Time, which if you include the 3DS remake is what, 4 times now in 15 years? And don't even get me started on Rayman 2. They remake that game about every other year. <.<
The only drek I see about Nintendo being a plague to the industry are the what I like to call "True Capitalist Radio's of Gaming" So TGWG or The Escapist or how Gametrailers ripped into the WiiU in a skit at last E3 calling it the "Battered Housewife who you keep around for the cooking" of Consoles. But honestly I find it hilarious that we this people attention. I honestly don't care what a reviewr will say, I trust my own opinion enough to formulate my own. Example, I love how half of the people who give the WiiU drek will ask me to play mine. But hey, live and let live.
Journalists are just using Nintendo to get hits to articles titled "Nintendo's Doomed". In reality, while they aren't exactly bring out new IP's, at least they have a decent roster of games, compared to the bland lineup of the competition. Personally I cant see Nintendo having a good time this Generation and will probably be the first to move on to the next. Once the PS4/Xbone launch dies down a little, people will start comparing them equally rather than picking out the Wii-U's flaws.
Personally, I don't find most criticisms levied against Nintendo in recent years to be all that grievous. A handful of HD remakes? Big whoop, like Microsoft hasn't rehashed a veritable mountain of classic arcade games remade in HD. Relying on long-standing IPs instead of creating new ones? I'm all for breaking new ground, but I'm also a firm believer in "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Reselling old titles? Sorry if this makes me Mr. Unpopular, but the '80s and '90s were the golden age of gaming as far as I'm concerned, so if a game company's gonna bring back oldies-but-goldies instead of farting out endless streams of vapid CoD and Half-Life clones, I'm all for it. I wouldn't call myself a Nintendo fanboy by any stretch of the term, but to me, Nintendo's library of games is far more expansive and varied than those of its competitors, and that's basically enough for Nintendo to get my vote over Microsoft and Sony. If you prefer the latter two, more power to you...I certainly don't share your taste in games, but hey - different strokes.
I've been a hardcore Nintendo fan for my entire life. I can say that when others complain about Nintendo going third party, I just don't see it. Sure, the Wii U isn't selling that great, but it is still a great console, and then there is the 3DS; and come on, every kid on earth owns one of those. So I don't see Nintendo in any danger whatsoever, and I think that they will continue to make games for a long time.
Some of these are arguable and some haven't released yet (like Kingdom Hearts 2.5 Remix HD), but according to this list there are 35 HD "remasters" on the PlayStation 3. I don't think any of them are like Wind Waker HD either, which was an actual remake and not just a retexturing. Also, what you are accusing Nintendo of doing, it's usually called making a new installment in a series. That's how franchises work and even then they usually put it lot more than most do for a sequel. You may say their "stale" but clearly not everyone agrees.
