    The Metroid Series Official Thread

Metroid, the series that started the phenomena of female protagonists. Starting with the original game, we got a strange and very interesting spin on scifi for the NES. The exploration of Plant Zebes was a experience that will not be forgotten for those who had the privalage to play the original game. Ever since then, there have been games in the realm of 2D that were like, disliked, hit, missed, but ultimately entertained us as kids through it all. Games that made the 2D platform in order: Metroid, Metroid 2 Return of Samus, Super Metroid (aka Metroid 3), and Metroid Fusion (Metroid 4). A remake of Original Metroid was made on the 2D platform called Metroid Zero Mission, and it was rather good too.

With the advent of 3D gaming going full swing with the Gamecube, Metroid Prime made the scene. This promoted much skepticism and many were not too sure that'll go well. Once people got their hands on it when it hit the shelves, it blew any doughts of it being a good game out of the water. It gave a new experience we now love today. I personally can vouch for the Prime series being excellent.

With Other M and the new Federation Force coming out, there isn't much hope for a proper new Metroid game coming out soon. Though I still stand firm in hope. It may take a few years but Metroid will be in the upswing again.

Go ahead and discuss the Metroid series with others. Whether you are interested and never played it before or someone who knows the games well, tell us what you think or want for the series. I'm a major Metroid buff myself and I'm sure other have played and enjoyed it too, so don't be afraid to ask questions! Discuss away!

I liked Prime more than I thought I would. It was like space laser archeology. Pretty lovely to fight though.

Ridley at theend felt like a prefect boss when I fought him near the end. For some reason, it was just satisfyingly challeging, as if right in my butter zone.

Zero Mission is a good way to start getting into the series and lore of the game. Though I'd advise playing the first time for the game and the second time for item collection. With Metroid's replayablity, you'll find new things you didn't see on a previous run. It's always a fun experience~

What I've wondered is how the pickups work.

Like, how does a weird spiky space turtle drop missiles?

Super Metroid is the best one. I also accept people that like Prime, but most of my childhood was consumed by the darkness known as Super Metroid.

That is a good question, though the reality of it would be too mind bending. It's one of those things where it's better to accept it and not question it than try to hurt your own brain figuring it out. but if it needs to be explained, the simple answer is 'game logic' or 'Nintendo Logic'.

I can understand this. Super Metroid was the first of it's kind to not only use the old formula but implement it in new ways with new items and abilities that complement the non-linear style of gameplay it has. With such a open ended world and one with atmosphere which is also backed up greatly by it's music, it's a experience I'd encourage anyone to try out.

Meta Ridley was quiet the powerhouse boss for a penultimate boss. The remixed theme only added to his imposing nature and power. Though he still is no match for the final boss. Metroid Prime is certainly the most powerful, at least before the whole thing with Dark Samus. All of Metroid Prime's attacks in Shell form do critical damage if not dodged even with the greatly heightened defenses of the Phazon Suit, which does add quite a challenge if your no good with dodging attacks.

Yeah, Meta Ridley was easily my favorite boss of the series.

He's also the source of my high school nickname and half of my current username.

Alert! A new transmission has entered Milky Way space! Samus Aran returns with two new Metroid games this year and next.

    Metroid Prime 4

    Metroid: Samus Returns
It seems with the Nintendo is finally getting their heads out of their butts and giving us two new Metroid games after a 10 year Metroid drought. It honestly about time they got back to this series. I get Other M killed the series temporarily, but 10 *squee!*ing years without a game? Jezz.

Does another Prime sequel mean that the atrocity that was Other M is no longer canon?

It hasn't been talked about, but that doesn't mean no one has played it. I've beaten Fusion a very huge number of times and even managed to get 100% of the items a few times. Fusion is really a bit more streamlined and easy compared to some of the other games, but at least some of the bosses provided some level of challenge. I think the two boss I had major difficulty with when first facing them were Nightmare X in Sector 5 and The robot spider boss, whose name slips me, in the reactor core area.

No. Other M, as far as I am aware, is still considered cannon. Metroid Prime 4 being made is a mere formality, as far as I am concerned. I really think Nintendo is only making Prime 4 to shut up the fans who have been begging them for 10 years+ for Prime 4 to be made.

Also, I imagine that it's being made to compensate for the flop of Federation Force, which shouldn't of ever existed to begin with. >.>

From what I've read, the 3DS one is a remake of the Game Boy game of the same title.

You are correct. Metroid: Samus Returns, is a remake of Metroid 2: Return of Samus on the Gameboy. This was made to revamp the old game and it so happened that AM2R got out about the same time the remake was in development, thus the C&D against AM2R.

With dread out, I had to spoil one thing for myself. The title theme~ I was actually surprised and delighted that it pulled from the tone of Original Metroid's darker, isolating version of the theme.

Also found this while perusing the interwebz~

I haven't decided yet whether or not I'm going to get Dread. Much as I like the Metroid series as a whole, what little I know about the game unnerves me.

Well, the nature of the game is darker since it's supposed to be at the end of the timeline. And Fusion wasn't exactly sunshine and rainbows either. And to find out a certain parasitic bioform survived, in some capacity, doesn't exactly make for the happiest of situations.

Yeah. Looking back at Fusion, I don't exactly have fond memories of the SA-X. Positively chilling.

Though depending on how its manipulated, said SA-X isn't the brightest bulb on the chandelier.
