I tried to use bamboo knitting needles the first time I knit and it was miserable. When they weren't splintering and stabbing me, they were holding my yarn too tight and making it making it cut into my hands! I feel your pain! I suggest less pointy sticks, preferably aluminum, and a nice slippery yarn that won't bind up on you. ...And also perhaps Kevlar gloves. ;)
