It's sandboxy, it's free, it's (by default) completely in ASCII, and most of all: Fun! All sorts of fun! Dwarf Fortress uses what is undoubtedly the most complex game engine of any game in its class, generating not only giant worlds but also histories spanning centuries, civilizations each with their own distinct traits, religions and economies, with detail to the point of absurdity. It also doesn't seem to have a thread here, which I have attempted to rectify with maximum applicable expeditiousness.
