I have an idea about, writing a story, where the main characters are twin pony hybrids. The male will be with fangs, a curved horn like the tip of a manticores' tail, a mane, and I am debating giving him a couple claws. The female has a manicores' tail and manticore's wings.

The story will pretty much be following their lives and the difficulty that they face. So I was just wondering what everyone thought about the idea and what comments you guys might have.

    Seems kinda squicky to me.
Ponies are portrayed as sapient, while manticores aren't.

Basically, a hybrid pretty much implies bestiality.

Hey, I've been debating on how to explain it... Like you said, it wouldn't exactly seem normal. Only explanation I could think of kind of feels like a coup out...

Instead of a hybrid, you could go with some sort of permanent lycanthropy.

    Weremanticores, who don't change back.

hhhmmmm.... ^^ I like the idea, though that would bring up the question of why they can't change back. Them being twins could explain why they don't go more manticore. As well as bring up the question, of if it is hereditary. Or if something can bring it on, while in the womb?

The only problem with that is that this is referring to ponies and using the term 'Were' refers to a human transformed into their state.

True, but I figure folks would be able to figure it out.

Well, I guess it worked for werehog Sonic, which featured neither "were" nor hog...

Do you know the exact meaning of the Were? I could possibly try to find another word with a similar meaning.

.... Both true, people would at least understand what it means. Hhmmmm... all the thoughts

Though for Sonic, I think the writers thought they were being funny or clever, since he is a hedgehog.

Thanks, for putting your thoughts here!

I thought about the Weremanticore thing. I have come up with a couple different ideas.
    1. Like with majority of myths of werewolves, it is possible to contract. However, it depends on the environment from which you spent time in when you were young... Kinda like magical radiation (think less Fallout equestria and more crystal empire, how strong pulses + length = crystal.)
    2. All the ponies who becomes a Were-Manticore, are descendants from a certain village hundreds of years ago. Who had been cured by an evil creature/unicorn. (Any of you know Spider Syndrome? Or the Ram Standing Tall? It would be something sort of like that.)
    3. It is a genetic mutation, that typically only occurs in earth ponies. No one has yet figure out how this mutation started. However, it can be carried down as a hidden recessive trait, but thanks to the twins sharing the womb and one not being an earth pony. It... in a sense twisted the mutation, causing it to affect both.

All three sound pretty good and two of them do support elements in the world of Equestria. Both would have a fairly simple exposition as the details would be supported by the world itself.

The third one would go more into the genetics and biological structure of the pony body. Exposition on such a thing maybe more complex and would require you to know the science of the body.

You're right the first two would probably be easier to explain and people would just expect it, cause Magic.

As for the third, I'm currently a Pre-Vet major and going through my genetics class. So ask around, for help on ways to explain it. Though honestly included it, because at least explain why they couldn't change back.

Not sure how to explain that for the other two.

    -possible name replacements for Were-manticores-
    • Steda-manti
    • Tovuchora
    • Acanthpalea
    • Equuraptera
    • hippleon
    • Tachequeon
    • Equitheran
    • Hippungula
Any other ideas? I know I put up a few confusing names
