Hmm, well... the best way to record is (I think) to take a "first person" record his stuff. Then the second record his stuff according to the first person, and then the third according to the previous two and so forth.

And something i did today - according to the word "Psycho" i made some kind of composition to fit it. Right now it's a Piano solo, hopefully ready to be changed. [link] (I see it doesn't have much to do with pony, but the hell with it. Posting to show some activity.)

Oh and, if you like this, Luprony, i can send you the sheets to play it.

Drum tracks make everything easier, and they're easy to sequence
If a song has a drum track, have that first - then send it for someone to start recording to

Also a midi or basic virtual rough draft can make things easier

I was just saying - not that we'd use this one.

Of course drums are basically the rhythm-keepers. If the drums are not sounding in place, then screw the whole piece. Though, I am not gonna use drums in this piece (At least not the rock type-ish (more classical (little amount of drums))). I love the piano, and basically it's the main melody here, so i'll "sync" every instrument to follow it.

But all in all, you're right - Drums are the easiest to use and the best way to accurate/sequence.

Jaret - if you're serious about people performing your music, you should learn how the instruments performed so as not to write something near impossible to play on it.

That only matters if you've got webspace of your own. Think of a server where those allowed can not only download but also upload files.

Sounds like a sort of classic overdub done like a round robin, especially if you're thinking about mixing new audio tracks into the stereo mix as soon as they're recorded, similarly to how bouncing is done on a four-track tape recorder. Might be simpler for non-technical people, but if you want quality and the ability to change something in the mix afterwards, you need separate tracks for each instrument.

Now if you do work with more than two tracks (= one stereo track), you could take a piano roll editor and some tone generators and make a basic accompaniment track with drums, bass and something that plays chords so that everypony knows where they are in the song. Perhaps make one without bass for a bass player, too, for example. Once you've got real drums (in case you want real drums as opposed to sequenced drums), you can make a new accompaniment track with the real drums so that those who want to record something later can play to real drums, once the final bass is there you do the same with the bass, and so forth. That way, the rhythm section has something to play to before an actual rhythm section is even recorded, and once that's done, everyone else can adapt themselves and their playing to the final rhythm section.

If you don't want drums, you can also use a metronome and remove it once everything's recorded.

Other than our problem of getting songs online, I found another agenda worthy cause! Flankbook music groups.

I recently joined flankbook (Don't judge me!) and I started joining groups like MAD! I happened to chance upon a musician brony group that is trying to do THE SAME thing as we are. So, I was thinking I should give them a wave over! What do y'all think of that?

Good as it is more ponies in our orchestra?

    -OR-

Bad as it might exasperate our music uploading problem?

I'm for it, as there might be a technologically skilled pony there willing to help our cause.

Ummmm we haven't even been given a single score of music to start recording a single piece
Shouldn't we at least have a proof of concept before we start getting entangled with others?

....That makes sense if you put it that way.

I guess we will wait and see until we get our first song out!

I kind of expected this answer and this might have been more or less an excuse to bump...we need to figure out the tech stuff! I am willing to DO the ENTIRE tech thing myself, but I don't have the knowledge or the skills to do so. Someone is going to need to either
    • Teach me
    • step up to the plate
    • or I could go trial and error, but I don't think we'd want that......
those are the only options we have at this point.

I'm not saying to turn down their offer (if they gave an offer), but we should at least get our stuff in order before we start expanding
This is going to have to work some way, and doing is learning - so we might as well dive into the doing part

No they didn't give an offer, I just chanced upon a post where more bronies were collaborating to do the same thing as we are. They seemed as troubled as we are with the uploading part....if not more so, as they are just gathering members.

I have no clue how to make or upload to a server like what Pulse was talking about, but I can get to work right now on the rhythm section for the intro, that way we've at least got something recorded, though we may not know what exactly to do with it after that point.

Well, then let's just get it worked out until that point. We can figure that out while you get the rhythm section down.

I looked up FTP servers and the only free ones I could find were only for private use for one person, or only ran on windows, so we'll have to figure out some other method of sharing the recordings.

Also, I'm trying to upload the rhythm section to bandcamp (I figured I'd just put it there until we figured out how this is going to work) but for some reason bandcamp gets a quarter of the way through the upload and then stops. Any suggestions as to where I should upload it instead?

How about those who already have webspace of their own, either on commercial hosting services or on a Linux box standing at their very own place? They should already have FTP servers up and running because FTP is often the best way to upload your stuff onto the server in the first place. Can't anyone of them set up a dedicated folder with special rights for additional registered members of the EveryPony Orchestra?

I wonder if we can't just use the download section of this site to get our pieces together.

Lol. I'm sorry to say there might very well be a problem with that, it just conked out on us and it's not looking good for a fix (the downloads section) :s

What exactly are you looking for? What do you need to be able to do? I MIGHT be able to help in some way, shape or form..

I think at the moment we just need somewhere that all the members of the orchestra can access, where we can upload/download the recordings of the individual instruments. (Tenor or Pulse, did I miss anything, or is that pretty much the gist of it?)

Also, I know this is kind of late, but I just now noticed it. Thanks to whoever it was that gave me rep when I posted the score! That was really nice of you :D

That's it. I thought about a file upload/download area with restricted access rights, i.e. limited to certain users only. I still believe FTP would be the best solution, even though uploads require special software which also makes downloads more comfortable (FTP client or browser plugin, all available for free).

........I was just lost in a wave of technology lingo there.

    Now where was I.......Oh yeah!

A TON of people joined on the group page, but not here so this is a shameless page bump to bring this to their attention!

    Now back on topic.

Maybe we could just e-mail our parts to a single e-mail address? I know it isn't the most efficient way of doing things, but unless someone who both knows how to and has the time to do this FTP thingamajig that's being discussed, it will have to do.

Hello, I'm a member as of yesterday.
I didn't expect it to be like this, with recordings and all, but I guess I could manage if there was a site to share files and the sort, and I'd have to ask my dad about recording equipment...
Gah! I'm not used to this is all. But at least I'm an... well, okay piano player. I used to play solo, but now I'm in my highschool band. I don't practice much yet, admittedly...
I'm sorry to say I don't dare to play solo parts on a piece, yet... but I will try my best!
I might as well add, I play Bass/Tuba pieces on electric piano in the band. (yes, weirrddddd....)
I hope to do well on this, but I'm not sure how I'll do. I should start practicing more, then....
