Nintendo does it again. Surprising us with their silly ideas.

So...They made a 3DS without it's main selling point and then removed one of the key, defining advantages the DS had over the PSP and it's many updates - fitting in your pocket comfortably - to then replace it with this thing? Why would I buy this over the 3DS? That switch on the side turns the effect off if I need to, why would I by a clearly inferior product, even if it was cheaper?

Ugh! This just doesn't strike me as smart. At least the XL versions of the DS made some sense, which was to give you a larger screen to see the games on. This is just paying for a device that is actually worse. It's slightly insulting, really. Other than being remade to fit in the hand better, I really couldn't care less.

    Bah humbug to it!

Well, the thing is, this iteration is specifically made for children 7 and younger. As you may know, the 3D effects can hurts young kids, so this is their answer to that. Nor being able to fold or fit into any pocket is still a stupid move though. Honestly, I'd like it if my 3DS didn't have 3D. I never use it anyway, and more battery life without the function. :p

All in all, I find this silly and dumb. But I'm not the target audience, so I guess that's fine.

No, that makes no sense. According to the advert, this has the same audience as the normal one because it's not just kids playing it. It's for us too and...We'll, we're turning our noses up at it.

Then why are adults playing it too?

Oh whatever! As long as it's made to be tough and withstand impacts or liquid, it'll be perfect for kids. Otherwise, not so sure.

That was probably to demonstrate that Nintendo handhelds are good for adults too. I dunno. Console advertisements are usually over my head.

Why would Nintendo want to downgrade from 3D to 2D?

The 3D was a gimmick in the first place, and is potentially dangerous to use for kids younger than 7. The 2DS is for kids younger than that.

The 3D can be turned off on the 3DS, so there is really not much point in getting one if you already own a 3DS. As Yami said, it is obvious the intended audience is children/young-teens. You can clearly see by the design of it. Parents who do not want their kids playing 3D games (as it can be uncomfortable for younger eyes) would probably want to buy this. Why? It will most likely be cheaper than a 3DS, so you are not spending more for the 3DS when you will be disabling that functionality anyway. I say it is a good move by Nintendo. If the design was not so clunky or would at least fold I would actually buy one. 3D is gimmicky and I hate it. It makes my experience not as fun in the end.

It will indeed be $40 cheaper than the standard 3DS. And yeah, the #d was only ever a novelty for me at best. I haven't used it in months. Plus it drains the already poor battery life.

I will say however that whoever keeps naming their products like this needs to be replaced. Nintendo 2DS is not really a great name for a NEW product. Someone like my technology-inept mother would assume 3DS is the newer "version". Yes of course the 3DS would technically be the more advanced of the two, just thought it was a bit odd though.

There's already a parody up. Pretty funny :p

    I bought a 2DS instead of a 3DS.
    1. No hinges. My nieces have broken several DS versions by breaking the hinges. Talking to my brother and other parents of kids, this happens A LOT. So no hinges is a very good thing if they come over and want to play with it.
    2. $40 cheaper. I wouldn't use the 3D on it anyway, so why pay for something I'm not going to use?

You guys are forgetting that there are millions of people who buy Nintendo handhelds just to play Pokemon. The 2DS is considerably cheaper, omits a feature that they'll rarely use anyway (especially since X/Y aren't even 3D for most of the time) and it's apparently very comfortable. And don't forget that this is a Nintendo handheld without hinges, you should all know how indestructible they are.

I really like it after actually using one, and actually plan to buy one myself.
it's comfortable to hold, and I love the shoulder buttons.
    I like it's hingless
and the resolution is really good since the screens are smaller
    plus yay cheaper

It's good to hear some positive feedback on the 2DS. I love my 3DS XL, but I can defintiely see how the 2DS would appeal to some people.

Ah...this. Yeah, I remember seeing a commercial for this a couple days ago, and I could hardly believe it when they said 2DS. I thought, "Gee, didn't they already make something like that? I believe they called it...the DS." I get that it's supposed to be marketed towards younger kids or something to that effect, but still, kinda seems like a waste of resources on Nintendo's part.

Not at all. Nintendo is once again abusing the fact that people will buy it even if they don't really need or even want it...
