I made the group "Players" a while ago with the intention of starting an online Brony orchestra. However, due to the low traffic in the groups section, Jaret has proposed that I start a thread. Good idea! So here we are! The idea of this thread is to get things going so lets have at it! What is an Online Orchestra? An online orchestra is different from a traditional sense in that instead of sitting together and playing at the same time, we will each record our parts and send them in to one person who has the know how to make it into a single song. Why would anypony do that? The reasons are simple: 1) to have fun doing what we enjoy, namely music, and to combine it with ponies! 2) to show off what we can do! We can spread the love via EPR. 3) why not? _____________________________________________________________________________ Now that we've got that taken care of, we can start on the important things! What are we going to play? Well until we can get some composers on board, we will play covers, which could be found here. We can divvy up the parts by posting on the thread. Meet the Orchestra! I'll edit this when more people join! Jaret- Our main man. He's here to his Admin stuff. Self taught pianist. I don't have any decent recording equipment or anything to transfer MIDI stuff (I've never had to, I just play as a hobby), but I'd gladly splash the cash to rectify this. Must say, never really worked with a group before, so this will be an interesting experience.
I think we can cover all the parts now..... Lets try doing a cover song first! Vote for the song we cover! (I'm up for Pinkie's Laugh Your Fears Away Song)
What about the main theme? Seems a fitting start, although I'm happy with anything. As long as we get to do Winter Wrap Up at one point, I'll be as happy as can be.
Sounds like a cool idea! I say we have Only the pianos, violins, and vocals at the beginning until we hit the "ah" part, THEN we add everything else. The only thing now is to assign people to certain parts. Anyone with expertise in that or should we just have at it? Here are the parts
Any composers here? I'm used to solo projects, be it on piano or on music software, and I wouldn't want to tell people what to play, so I'll rule myself out there.
There are only three parts, two vocals and the bass guitar. I say we try to add a chord sound to it! (Anyone know how?)
Just a couple of mistakes with the vocals- 1. It's 'tons', not 'lots'. 2. It's 'feat', not 'thing'. Anyhow, I hope this turns out good. Sadly, I can't play an instrument or sing, so I won't be able to help. Suggestion - Electric guitar with heavy metal, deep voiced lyrics! (Metajazz!) [/sarcasm]
I can try adding in chords and lines for more instruments and such. I'll have to do it later tonight though, as I have to go to work soon.
Another fun idea would be to try and do a capella covers in addition to this. I'd be down for that. Only thing I'd have to contribute is an untrained singing voice, but I've been told it's still pretty good. So if you want me to give a trial run or something, I'd be up for it. As for the names, I like The Sym-pony Orchestra best.
Ok, I finished a bit over half of it. I decided to upload it and see what you guys think even though it's not done. The instruments/keyboard settings used in the recording are 2 violins, piano, bass, 2 acoustic guitar lines, trombone, banjo, tenor sax, electric guitar, and I added some light drums even though we don't have a drummer (possibly in the future?). As for the vocal lines, I substituted with another piano and e. piano, as I figured it would sound better than me attempting to sing it. You can listen to it here: http://meletric.bandcamp.com/ If you have any constructive criticism, or just don't like it, don't hesitate to say so. Also, if you'd rather someone with more composition experience do it, that's fine too.
That sounds awesome so far, but it king of sounds cluttered to me at the 29 second mark. Other than that I love it!
Thanks! Yeah, I was messing around with a bunch of counter-melodies there, and I got a bit carried away and added too much. I'll just change some of those parts to chords instead, that way there isn't quite as much going on at once.
The Sym-pony Orchestra for a name is great. I'll try to link some of my work, maybe some of it'll be good enough for here.
@ Derpy Hooves Go right ahead! @Jaret That would be appreciated here! I didn't know you composed as well.
Btw, I'm kinda partiel to the name "Filly Harmonic Orchestra" - it's a pony pun without being too blatantly obvious
Nah, just because it has the word "filly" in it. WE should be fillies if we'd use that name, kinda. I like Sym-pony orchestra the best, because it is so simple. @Meletric: I absolutely love the intro (the part to 0:08). It sounds so... peaceful. The rest, well, is great, but this part just stands out.
Right now, while we wait for the scores to be adjusted for the band, we have to do the rest of the work for setting up the band. What are we called? There is a new poll at the top of the page. Vote for your favorite name. That's all for now. All I can say is practice daily. Tenor out.
