It seems this coup was poorly prepared. It makes one wonder if Erdogan knowingly let it occur to bolster his support.

Many say that it was staged so his popularity could go up and stable his power.
I think it is a really good theory.

It definitely seems plausible. Given Turkey's history of coups d'etat, Erdogan's intelligence services must be generally keeping an eye on the armed forces and such. He would definitely gain from it. Meanwhile, secularists, Kurds, etc. will probably end up seeing some sort of crackdown on dissent.
