“Well, you’d say no,” she said reasonably. “That’s why you didn’t answer. You didn’t want to embarrass me.”
He offered her a plate of eggs and potatoes.
She murmured a little. “Okay. Sorry. You don’t have to say it, but you wouldn’t hurt my feelings.”
He nodded before beginning to make up some plates.
Her hand slipped up to rest on his jaw. “That question that you didn’t want to answer. If I asked you, what would you say?”
He rolled his eyes and Ben squinted. “What do you want?”
There was a silence and he would feel her fingers brushing his chest. “Would you qualify us as friends?” she said finally. “Is that all we are?”
Puck glowered. “It wouldn’t have surprised me if you abandoned us.”
She was quiet for a moment. “Why don’t you do it when we’re awake?”
“Some coffee and hash browns,” he said, looking up at Puck. “Hello. I heard you wanted to leave me.”
She murmured softly. “I’m not going to remember this when I wake up,” she said quietly. “Do you like touching me?”
“Grumpy,” he said with a laugh.
She laughed a little, burying her face in his neck. “Okay is different than wanted.”
She watched him for a moment before closing her eyes. “But you don’t like it.”
“Mmhm,” he said, settling down the bags. “I’ve spent a long time passing as human.”
Her eyes fluttered open and she pulled away a little, her gaze intense despite her sleepiness. “Are you uncomfortable?”
He laughed a little. “I went to get breakfast for all of us.”
Her fingers still moved through his hair gently and she rested her temple against his. “I don’t think I’m awake yet,” she said with a small laugh.
Ben stood there, holding two bags in his hands. “What’s going on?”
