"It's better than it used to be a few years ago, what with the lack of humanity. What's your favorite color?"
"Went home, took a shower, and got into bed. When I woke up you were gone.."
"So we're practicing," he said easily. "We'll keep doing that."
He pursed his lips. "I like blue. Like the sky."
She couldn't help but hug him, her arms trembling. "I-I'm so glad you're okay."
He let out a sigh. "Right. He's a tyrant."
"You don't have to apologize," he said, looking ahead again .
She stopped and covered her face in her hands, letting out a small cry before hastily wiping away the tears. "I didn't know where you went or why."
"Michael was never trained to fight, Adeline. He's better at being a leader than anything."
"I owe them my life," he said roughly. "As long as I please."
This didn't seem to help, and she sighed, sniffling as she started back to leave. "Okay."
"Because you have to practice all of this in such a short time.. I've had so many years to practice one kind of magic."
He tilted his head. "Guilty? I'm not guilty. I'm just repaying the clan."
"Then why did you leave?" she asked, looking back at him, her voice cracking as he would see the tears in her eyes.
"Because I'm not more powerful than you. You can do so much more than me, Adeline."
His expression softened. "I don't mind, really. I've learned to deal with it."
She whimpered, hugging herself. "How was I supposed to know? You just left without saying anything."
"Don't have kids before we fight Michael," he said sternly. "And if you keep practicing then you'll be fine."
He seemed mildly annoyed. "I told you I'm fine with it."
She shied away, wiping something from her cheek. "I.. I thought you left and I would never see you again."
