He paused. "Yes." *** She squinted at him. "I would never.."
He kissed her deeply. "I don't like a lot of people. Doesn't mean I didn't think you were pretty."
Avice shifted the next morning, her brow furrowed as she slept.
"This is our song!' *** She perked up. "Yeah!"
"I pretended! You were still pretty."

It didn't take her long to fall asleep, the weariness of the events catching up.
He laughed. "It's true!" *** "Your pick now."
"Yes I would have," he reassured. "I promise."
She nodded quietly, her fingertips gently brushing his neck as she shut her eyes.
He beamed at her. "Our song." *** She nodded, turning back. "Sounds good."
"You're beautiful," he replied softly, as soon he was given permission. "In my eyes, easily the prettiest I've seen. Sweet and smart, too."
She gladly wrapped her arms around him, her touch cold.
He laughed brightly. "Our song!" *** "Sounds tasking."
He kissed her temple, his hand brushing her jaw warmly. "Not if you don't want me to."
"Yeah," she said softly, nestling comfortably. "A bit."
He leaned over to kiss her cheek. "Nuh uh." *** She nodded with a small smile. "A mystery."
He tapped the wooden spoon before turning to her, his hands in her waist. "Can I compliment you?"
She laughed slightly, blowing warm air into her hands. "That's true."
