He squinted at her. "I guess you are."
She hastily wiped her cheeks before speaking, her voice rough. "Hey.."
"The secretary," he explained. "She makes me nervous."
He shrugged. "I guess you're the boss of that, so I don't know."
Avice lay in bed silently, facing the opposite wall. She didn't quite move when he entered, nor did she say anything.
Landon turned to Val and Arlo. "We need to hurry. Like, hurry."
"Still," he said. "Besides, you're my best friend."
There was silence on the other side before a quiet "come in" sounded.
Landon glanced at the secretary, keeping his composure smooth.
He chuckled. "I wouldn't let them."
She turned, sighing as she wiped a small tear from her cheek.
He nodded, his gaze cautious. "We'll make it."
He grinned, his hand brushing through her hair. "Good."
She stood on her toes to kiss his forehead. "Okay."
Landon nodded. "It works."
He grinned. "So you don't mind me saying that?"
She smiled for him, lifting his hand and kissing the tattoo on his wrist. "I love you too."
He nodded. "It'll work out!"
