"Oh, I see. Makes sense to me."
She nodded. "It was scary."
"Definitely not," he said. "I see you for you."
"Is that how it works?" he asked, folding his hands thoughtfully. "If they like you?"
She didn't seem to notice it, and instead took his face in her hands, which were no longer cold. "Can I have a kiss?"
"Magic right? I guess you're just that good." He grinned.
"Did it work?"
"Okay," she said slowly, taking his hands. "I really love you, you know that?"
"No, it was. That was just the last thing you needed to qualify."
"Fine." He crossed his arms. "Go be the teacher's pet."
She grinned at the ceiling. "You can tell me the truth," she said, though her tone seemed sad. "I'm sorry for letting this happen."
"Yep," he said with a nod. "Just cause you remembered."
"No," he said, "but the words still hurt."
"Excuse me?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.
"I can ask if you want," he offered.
"I worry about you," she said stubbornly, going to shift but wincing when she moved too much. "Did I kill the people?"
"But you did," he joked. "Now you're the best there ever was."
"Do you want to ask?"
She looked at him strangely, her eyes worried. "Are you okay?"
"Thanks," he said, putting his arms around her. "I'm proud."
