"Don't they just finish the project and move on normally?" he asked, returning her gaze.
"I don't want it to be temporary." He frowned. "That's not long enough."
"I'd hope so," she said. "He seems mean."
He raised an eyebrow at her. "Aren't we lab partners?"
"I can't let you die," he told her. "Sadness would be imminent."
"Still," she said, her eyes fierce, "it wasn't okay."
"I guess I'll just leave then," he said, starting to climb down. "My work here is done."
"I don't think I would," he said. "I'd be too sad."
She was quiet for a moment, before going to him and kissing his cheek. "I'm sorry you had to experience that."
"I was giving you your assignments," he said flatly. "That's all."
"I can't smile when you die," he said. "There's no way."
"Why did you try it?" she asked, tilting her head.
