"Then I'd be mad at you and whatever caused it," she said, before resting her head on his shoulder. "Don't die, okay?"
He nodded. "I like it."
"Because," he said sharply, turning to face him, "you're hurting her."
"I would be very angry," she said, her eyebrows furrowing. "I would be angry that you left me."
"So we have today's plan," he said with a grin. "Perfect."
Francis froze, his steps hesitating. "What do you want, Evan?"
"Don't worry! You can't get on my bad side."
"I think the creek is about five miles out," he said. "We can do it."
Francis was oblivious to Evan, and walked casually away from the school.
"I suppose that's true," she said. "I would anything in my power to protect the people I love."
"I always stopped at the creek," he said. "I didn't want to go further."
Francis took his things. The walk to his house was fairly long, but he didn't want to drive.
"How so?"
"I don't know," he said. "I never found the end."

"Hmm," she murmured. "Nope. I think very highly of you, Mr. Curnow."
He shook his head. "Fine."

"I will," she said, placing a hand on his shoulder to shift slightly. "I'd say we're even."
"I did!" He crossed his arms. "They would have died otherwise."
