"Because I couldn't sleep," he replied simply. "Why are you even asking me?"
"Hmph," she mumbled. "I don't believe you."
He smiled against her lips. "I know," he said calmly. "I like making things difficult."
"I'm fine with that. It's not the reason I'm tired, really." He crossed his arms. "His anger doesn't keep me up at night."
"You're not going to use it against me, are you, Curnow?" She raised an eyebrow at him.
He shook his head. "I don't like gifts."
She grinned, her cheeks tinged pink. "Yeah. Like that."
"No," he replied smoothly. "I don't really like gifts."
"Right," he said. "Because that's what it was."
"Like when you compliment me," she said, her nose scrunching at the thought.
"Okay," he said, nodding. "Okay."
"Apologies," he replied flatly. "Long night."
"I don't," she teased. "You can fluster me pretty easily, though."
He kissed her cheek softly. "I still wish I could have been there sooner."
"Miss Abernathy," he said slowly. "Ask me again when you actually care."
Their faces were still close together, and she watched his eyes before laughing joyfully. "Okay, Curnow. Okay."
His eyebrows furrowed. He traced his fingers lightly over the bruises before looking up at her. "I'm sorry."
"Mm," he mumbled, a bit distracted.
"You don't get flustered?" she asked, putting her arms around his neck. "Are you sure?" she asked, before leaning in to kiss him.
He brushed her cheek. "Are you okay?" he asked.
