"Who else was I supposed to like?" he said. "He kept me pretty much isolated. I didn't have anyone else to look up to."
She looked stricken, following him and trying to touch his arm. "No, Puck, that's not it. I'm still your friend. We're still friends."
His expression soured. "She was kind before my father forced her to marry him." He paused. "Or so I heard."
"You're always treating me like a weak and defenseless. I don't need a knight in shining armor, Puck. I can take care of myself. I know how to use...
He relaxed a little, and they continued back to Saimore.
"I don't want to be thrown into battle," she replied sharply. "I just don't want to be belittled by you."
"I've just never done hugs," he said. "I can do anything else. Hugs are just foreign."
She leaned into his touch for a moment before shaking her head and pulling away. "How am I supposed to refute that when I'm not given any chances."
"You aren't walking near me anymore. Was it because of the hug? Do you just not want to be near me?"
It disappeared when he turned. She had a resolute look on her face. "I have control, Puck. I appreciate that you want to protect me, but I'm okay."
He immediately noticed, and that tired look slowly returned. "Nothing I do ever feels good enough."
