I guess the reason why people don't like Alicorn Twilight is because alicorns are close to gods in power, and people don't like Twilight having that level of power. It's the same reason I use Regular Twilight instead of Alicorn Twilight in "Science VS Magic".
But the thing is, we don't actually know this for sure. Yes, it might apply to Celestia and Luna, but those two were probably born as Alicorns, whereas Twilight and Cadence {The latter of whom use to be a Pegasus, according to a FIM Book} both ascended to alicorn status. Not to mention that I think there will be some episodes of Season 4 where Twilight still has to get use to having wings, since EQG and a recently released animatic pic revealed that she still has plenty of troubles with them.
They must be weak gods, if they can be beaten by a changeling. Maybe everpony has ascended to an alicorn. Maybe Celestia and Luna are just using the age spell or they were the outcome of a prank by Discord. Actually i don't care. Twilight was always overpowering. Now it makes sense to me.
"Chrysalis's helmet was stifling. It narrowed her vision, and she must see far. Her shield was heavy. It threw her off balance, and her target is far away."
So yeah. I may be late to the party here, but the very instant I watched Magical Mystery Cure, and the whole alicorn Twilight thing happened, I was struck with so much happiness and amazement that it was unreal. For a show of this nature, that is one to where the main demographic is children, to change the show's ebb and flow SO drastically was and is beyond amazing. I guess I'm one of those rare few bronies who not only didn't hate the whole thing, but absolutely loved it. MMC is my favorite episode of any show I know of, and it's definitely the best episode of MLP FiM in my opinion. To address the whole "Celestia losing to Chrysalis," thing, here's kind of my view on things. This is not anything but an idea that I have, so take it with a grain of salt. But I believe that Celestia could've beat Chrysalis, but she, in all her mercy, went easy on her at first and paid for it dearly. Celestia basically unknowingly let Chrysalis 'sneak up' on her in terms of her power, and if it weren't for that, I think Celestia would've won outright. The reason I like to believe this is, well, probably pretty obvious. I mean, love IS a powerful thing in MLP, and as such it still makes sense that Chrysalis could've beaten Celestia, but Celestia can move the sun. Now, I don't think their universe is Heliocentric, but rather Geocentric. So moving the sun isn't as impressive in this case, but I'd still say it was a hard task to move a giant ball of fire about 100-200 miles in diameter (my personal head-canon, please ignore if you don't like). Same with Luna of course, as the Moon is probably just a little smaller than the sun (she has to move the stars, as well). And Chrysalis was empowered by love at the time, so my humble theory is that Celestia let her gaurd down because she didn't want to kill the Queen, but that underestimation costed her dearly =P.
This - all of it. I know it's kind of late to still be talking about it, being that se04 is right around the corner and that most people who initially overreacted to AliTwi seem to have at least come to terms with it now, though they likely still have their doubts. But it's disconcerting to know that there still exist quite a few folks who are vehemently, even violently against it - if you've read some of the comments people leave on Equestria Daily, you already know what I mean. While I most definitely can agree that it happened "too soon", I don't see how it would impact the show negatively in any way. If I'm to address one of the most common complaints of "what if she'll no longer have time for her friends?" - so? Even if that were to happen, which it probably won't, it would still make for great storytelling. All of us have been through that at some point...ever had a buddy who got a girl/boyfriend and suddenly stopped hanging out with you? It's relatable, and having an episode that addresses such a problem would be a good thing, IMO. And that's pretty much my view in a nutshell - I'm not overly favorable towards AliTwi, but I can support it on the grounds that it opens just as many plot windows as it closes, if not more...i.e., the good outweighs the bad, at least as far as I'm concerned. Think about how prone poor Twi is to cracking under pressure. Going nuts because she feared skipping out on a letter to Celestia? Can you imagine how badly she'll flip out once the weight of her royal duties finally starts getting to her? I can. And let me tell you, I think some GREAT episodes are going to come out of it.
