They tripped out of the building as it trembled behind them, terrible, mechanical clicking from inside. Whatever it was didn’t seem able to pass the threshold of the house.
Val was trembling, obviously terrified. She stared back at the house, her eyes wide. She opened her mouth; but seemed unable to speak.
She didn’t protest, holding his hand as if it were a lifeline. She followed him back to the car, her breaths leaving her chest in short gasps.
He opened the door for her and got in on the drivers side, hastily turning on the car and checking around.
She got in, buckling in quickly, her eyes wide and calculating. “Landon,” she said eventually. “There’s something really bad in there.”
She paused, struggling with the words. “I don’t... I can’t describe it, really. You know those wood chippers that construction workers toss trees into?”
“It was kinda like that, except it was huge and it could move and it had sensors and it was like... fleshy.”
His confusion seemed to distress her more. "I don't know! It was like... oozing or something. It looked like it had flesh."
He seemed to get momentarily frustrated, an expression uncommon on his face. "Yes! I believe you! I just don't want to upset you."
"We just got chased out of a warehouse by a mechanical, flesh monster, Landon! I'm going to be a little upset!"
