There was no sign of her except for a set of small footprints in the snow leading into the warehouse.
The door was electrocuted open and as Landon ran down the hall, the clicking got louder and louder. The main chamber was in ruins, with the experiment completely shattered. Bookshelves had fallen, acid was steaming in the floor, and there was broken glass everywhere. Something scuttled in the shadows, but there was no sign of Val.
Landon looked around nervously, his hands shaking slightly as he crept further into the room, careful to step over spilled acid.
The thing lurking in the shadows lunged forward, clicking fiercely. It was still obscured, but whatever it was seemed to have found something and it clacked before a gunshot rang through the room, causing a mechanical squeal to pierce the room. It fell back and a small figure lunged at it, pushing it back.
Both the figure and the thing paused before turning to him. The thing took advantage of her distraction, ripped her off and throwing her, sending her skidding into the light before advancing on her. Val’s hair was in disarray and she had a cut on her cheek. Her eyes were wide, but her expression wasn’t one of fear; more of thoughtful focus. She reloaded the gun as the figure stepped into the light. It was misshapened and grey, with long limbs that clicked as they moved. The head was tilted at an unnatural angle, and it had millions of tiny black dots covering its face. In the very center of its head, there was a set of churning blades designed to crush. It moved haltingly, its long limbs moving it to where it need to go.
He panicked, uncertain what to do. Looking around on the floor, he picked up a glass bottle and threw at as hard as he could at the strange machine.
