“At least 100. Souls don’t go for as much as you’d think.” *** He chuckled, carrying her through the woods. “Yes!”
“I know, right? I thought I’d make a lot of money off of it.” *** He laughed, shifting her in his arms. “Okay. 3...2...”
“Guess your soul isn’t that rare.” *** “Hmph. Fine.” He let her go, crossing his arms as he stepped away. “You got lucky this time.”
She grinned at him before glancing up as Mike called her name. “Maxine’s ready for you now,” he told them. “She’s in her office.” *** He chuckled, delighted. “Just you wait. I’m goinng to dump you in that well.”
Val took a deep breath and nodded. “Yeah. Yeah. I’m good.” *** “Yes, I will. Mark my words. It may not be today, but I will dump you in that well at some point.”
She joined him, crossing her arms as they headed for Maxine’s office. *** He smirked. “Don’t be so dramatic.”
Val thanked him quietly before stepping into the room. Maxine sat at her desk, peering over her red, cat-eye glasses to type on her computer. She barely glanced up when they entered, pulling the pencil that she held between her teeth to make a quick note on a journal that was next to her. * * * "Psh. If you can't survive a fall like that then maybe you don't deserve to live."
She finished what she was typing and glanced up at the two of them. "Hello, you two," she said, pursing her lips. "Whaddya got for me?" * * * He laughed, pushing up his glasses. "Kidding. I know you'd survive the fall."
Val glanced over at him and discreetly touched his arm before turning to Maxine. "We have something big. Really big." Maxine's eyes alighted with interest and she leaned back. "You do, huh? Let's hear it."
