“Landon,” she replied evenly, starting the car back up. *** He laughed, kissing the tip of her nose. “Much obliged.”
She hesitated before shaking her head. “Nah. I’ll take you back to the apartment. I’m a little worried about you.” *** “You haven’t found my keys.”
“Yeah. You’re drunk by yourself. You don’t drink.” *** He flushed, but shook his head. “Maybe some other time.”
"Of course I'm drunk!" he said incredulously. "Don't people drink when they're sad?" *** She smirked. "Alright then."
She frowned, glancing at him out of the corner of her eye. “You’re sad?” *** He cleared his throat. “We should go make that collar.”
"I'm sad," he repeated in agreement, watching out the window. *** She nodded, taking his hand. "Yeah. Let's go."
"Why are you sad?" she asked tiredly, merging lanes. * * * He pulled her forward, holding Nugget's leash with his freehand.
"I said that?" she asked, furious with herself. "Why did that make you sad?" * * * He pulled the keys out from his front pocket with a cheeky grin. "Here we are."
"Because I love you too, but we can't be together anymore, and I'm starting to believe that you don't love me." *** "The front pocket!"
"No, Landon," she said mournfully, shaking her head. "You and I... we don't work together. It just doesn't work." * * * "Uh huh. You thought I was just embarrassed, but really, you were onto my secret."
"I know," he said quietly. "I heard you the first time. That's why I've been so sad." *** She glared at him. "How could you?"
She looked out the window, her hands tight on the steering wheel. "Do you still believe in soulmates?" * * * "Sorry, baby girl."
